The 10-year-old boy allegedly punched in the head during an attack in Melbourne\u2019s CBD was in the city receiving treatment for brain cancer.<\/p>\n
His mother, Cherie, was allegedly stabbed multiple times<\/a> after trying to protect him, after a 27-year-old man from Sunshine West allegedly attacked them unprovoked.<\/p>\n Heroic bystanders intervened<\/a> and rushed to the family\u2019s aid, restraining the man until police arrived.<\/p>\n The boy was diagnosed with cancer in 2023 and has required ongoing hospital treatment since, his uncle told the Herald Sun.<\/a><\/p>\n \u201cWhat happened to my sister and my nephews is disgusting. It should never have happened,\u201d her brother, Kirk Holt, told the publication.<\/p>\n He said the ordeal had left the family traumatised.<\/p>\n \u201cWe couldn\u2019t turn the lights off (in the hospital room) last night because (the kids) were so stressed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cThis has really affected them and scared them. They are all on edge.\u201d<\/p>\n Mr Holt said his sister was left with a fractured leg and injuries to the ligaments around her neck.<\/p>\n He said the alleged blow \u201cknocked\u201d his nephew \u201cto the ground\u201d.<\/p>\n Cherie remained at the Royal Melbourne Hospital on Wednesday, where her condition was listed as stable. Her son was assessed at the Royal Children\u2019s Hospital following the attack.<\/p>\n 27-year-old Sunshine West man, Jerry Sowood, was arrested and later charged.<\/p>\n The Herald Sun reported Mr Sowood argued in Melbourne Magistrates\u2019 Court on Wednesday that because the mother and son survived the attack, he had \u201ckept my humanity\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cI punched the kid in the head, I took the scissors and I stabbed the woman in the head,\u201d he told the court.<\/p>\n \u201cNo need to hide it \u2026 at least they\u2019re both still breathing, you know, so I kept my humanity.
