A few months later, in June, the experience became even more tangible. During Assembly, Integration and Testing (AIT),\u00a0Fatania\u00a0signed\u00a0the satellite himself.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The satellite\u00a0Fatania\u00a0helped integrate alongside fellow ECU student Andrew Burton is scheduled to launch aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket in 2027.<\/p>\n
NO ROOM FOR ERROR\u00a0<\/p>\n
Born and raised in Kenya,\u00a0Fatania\u00a0is of Indian heritage and has built his engineering career in Australia.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Getting his hands on space-bound hardware was the culmination of months of work; this included preparing ECU\u2019s newly opened ISO 6 (Class 1000) cleanroom to meet the standards\u00a0required\u00a0for space-related work.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The facility would eventually become the setting for\u00a0Fatania\u2019s\u00a0experience with the satellite, where he worked alongside professionals from LC60 AI \u2013\u00a0LatConnect\u00a060 and engineers from Lithuanian small satellite integrator Kongsberg\u00a0NanoAvionics.<\/p>\n

For Fatania, preparing the facility itself offered an early lesson in just how much work happens before a satellite can even be touched.<\/p>\n
There was extensive documentation to work through, environmental controls to\u00a0establish, alarms to\u00a0configure,\u00a0and strict guidelines to meet. Coordinating between different parties to keep everything moving was another challenge.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cAt the time, I questioned how much paperwork we had to work through,\u201d\u00a0Fatania\u00a0shares.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Looking back, however, he sees the documentation as an essential part of the process. Every requirement, from cleanliness and environmental conditions to compliance and certification,\u00a0mattered.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cSpace is not easy,\u201d he confesses. \u201cThere is no room for error.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
THE SKY IS THE LIMIT SPACEX FALCON 9<\/p>\n
The months of preparation finally paid off when the first satellite entered the facility.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Then came the part\u00a0Fatania\u00a0had been waiting for: working directly with the hardware that would eventually travel into orbit.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The payload\u00a0integration was \u201cvery intense\u201d.\u00a0Early in the process, the team\u00a0encountered\u00a0a hardware issue that required them to rethink how a\u00a0component\u00a0would fit and sit inside the satellite housing. It took several days of analysis and discussion before they found a safe way to package it.<\/p>\n

Later, they\u00a0encountered\u00a0a technical issue involving communication between different systems on board. The team spent about three days testing possibilities one at a time before\u00a0identifying\u00a0the cause.\u00a0<\/p>\n
For\u00a0Fatania, both incidents reinforced the same lesson: engineering is often about resisting the urge to rush.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cSlow down, go back to first principles, and work the problem methodically until it broke.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
As the intern in the room,\u00a0Fatania\u00a0says\u00a0the pressure of working on hardware destined for space manifested\u00a0mainly in\u00a0the questions he found himself asking.<\/p>\n

There was little tolerance for shortcuts. From\u00a0gowning\u00a0up and entering the cleanroom correctly to handling tools and hardware, every step had to be carried out with precision. Yash Fatania<\/p>\n
\u201cThere was no room for compromise anywhere,\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Every action was checked, then checked again, then checked a third time before anyone touched the hardware.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0see this level of precision at a mechanic\u2019s garage or a construction site. It is a different standard altogether.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
AIMING FOR THE STARS\u00a0<\/p>\n
One of the most rewarding moments came when the team\u00a0encountered\u00a0an issue involving a connector cable. Rather than\u00a0immediately\u00a0testing\u00a0possible solutions\u00a0on the physical hardware,\u00a0Fatania\u00a0suggested working through the problem in CAD first.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The approach meant the team could test a solution\u00a0virtually before\u00a0taking any risk with the real hardware.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The eventual testing was a collective effort, with the team brainstorming ideas and working through the options together. But for\u00a0Fatania, being able to contribute to the process and see an idea\u00a0led\u00a0to a practical solution was significant.<\/p>\n

Fatania\u00a0says,\u00a0\u201cWhat stood out most was watching basic principles from the classroom get\u00a0applied practically. Recalling the theory and then seeing it play out in real hardware and real decisions is what made everything click into place.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0something a lecture or a textbook can only take you halfway toward.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
The satellite is part of LC60\u2019s SWIRSAT1 mission, designed to capture high-resolution data on carbon emissions and environmental changes.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Before working on SWIRSAT1,\u00a0Fatania\u00a0had already been considering whether he might move towards the space industry. But there was another field competing for his attention:\u00a0aircraft.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Now, he finds himself genuinely caught between the two. Yash Fatania<\/p>\n
\u201cRight now, I\u2019m genuinely torn between the world of spacecraft and the world of aircraft, and I\u2019m still figuring out where I land.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
For other young students, his advice is simple: \u201cBe bold. Take risks.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cDon\u2019t let your dream stay a dream. Push boundaries, chase growth and change, and\u00a0you\u2019ll\u00a0see it turn into reality right in front of you.\u201d<\/p>\n
