{"id":82277,"date":"2026-08-28T11:35:07","date_gmt":"2026-08-28T11:35:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/82277\/"},"modified":"2026-08-28T11:35:07","modified_gmt":"2026-08-28T11:35:07","slug":"north-melbourne-aflw-player-mia-king-out-for-season-after-spinal-fusion-surgery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/82277\/","title":{"rendered":"North Melbourne AFLW player Mia King out for season after spinal fusion surgery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Two-time AFLW premiers North Melbourne have lost midfielder Mia King for the season after she required spinal fusion surgery for a neck injury.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The premiership midfielder reported neck pain following North&#8217;s win over Brisbane Lions last weekend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">King underwent a thorough medical examination in Brisbane, which revealed a disc injury near her spinal cord.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She remains in Queensland recovering after having successful surgery to fuse together the C5 and C6 vertebrae in her neck.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-06-24\/aflw-australia-ireland-north-melbourne-kangaroos\/106835514\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Roos dominate Aussie AFLW squad<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">North Melbourne has the most players of any club selected in Australia&#8217;s squad for the inaugural AFLW representative match against Ireland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Kangaroos confirmed the procedure would sideline King for the rest of the 2026 season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We will continue monitoring Mia in her recovery but we don&#8217;t expect this type of surgery to stop her from returning to play in 2027,&#8221; club doctor Victoria Norbury said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">King was part of North Melbourne&#8217;s premiership-winning team in 2024, but she missed out on last year&#8217;s grand final win after an ongoing PCL knee injury.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Kangaroos are again at the top of the ladder after two rounds this season, with the best percentage in the AFLW.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">North Melbourne general manager of women&#8217;s football Erin Lorenzini said the club would support King as she began her recovery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We wrap our arms around Mia,&#8221;
