A female teacher taking a sexual health class at a western suburbs high school has been temporarily put \u201con leave\u201d after allegedly making \u201csexual thrusting motions\u201d behind a male student.<\/p>\n
The Advertiser can reveal the Department for Education has launched an investigation into an incident at the school on Tuesday in which the teacher allegedly used a \u201crole play\u201d scenario to demonstrate sexual harassment.<\/p>\n
The Advertiser is not naming the school.<\/p>\n
According to a student\u2019s parent, the teacher asked a group of boys to come to the front of the class before dropping a pen. <\/p>\n
The teacher then asked one of the boys to pick the pen up, at which point she made \u201csexual thrusting motions\u201d behind the teenager, the parent claimed.<\/p>\n
A Department for Education spokeswoman said parents were informed prior to the lesson taking place about the relationships and sexual health education being provided \u2013 but that the \u201cdelivery of the lesson did not meet the standard expected\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe teacher is on leave while the department continues its investigation,\u201d she said on Friday.<\/p>\n
The parent called the description \u201cconcerning and uncomfortable\u201d, given the students\u2019 age, and said she had questioned the school if the demonstration was considered appropriate.<\/p>\n
The parent said she wasn\u2019t suggesting the teacher intended to make students uncomfortable \u2013 nor was she making allegations about the teacher \u2013 but was concerned about the teaching method, and was asking if there were more appropriate ways to teach sexual health education.<\/p>\n
The parent said the school had told her the lesson was \u201cintended to demonstrate and model the concept of sexual harassment through explicit teaching, role play and hypothetical scenarios\u201d.<\/p>\n
The teaching method, it said, was in line with both the Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum and Shine SA program.<\/p>\n
On Thursday, a Department for Education spokeswoman said the alleged conduct was \u201cunacceptable\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Department has been made aware of the matter raised by a parent in relation to a lesson about respectful relationships and sexual harassment,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n
\u201cThis complaint is being taken seriously and investigated by the department.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe conduct reported in the complaint is unacceptable. We are sorry for the distress this has caused the student and their family.\u201d<\/p>\n
It comes after Riverland students were exposed to the concept of bestiality and incest <\/a>during a 2024 \u2018Respectful Relationships\u2019 class run by headspace Berri, a mental health organisation operated by non-profit FocusOne Health.<\/p>\n Some teen girls reportedly felt so uncomfortable they asked to go to the toilet and never returned to the classroom, and the school apologised and launched an investigation.<\/p>\n Riverland mother Nicki Gaylard withdrew her children from the school <\/a>and in April launched a $250,000 lawsuit<\/a> against the state government and Renmark High School principal Matthew Evans.<\/p>\n In its defence filed with the District Court, the state government admitted \u201cthat it owed a duty of care\u201d to Courtney \u201cand that this duty of care was breached\u201d, but denied Courtney or her mother \u201csuffered harm as a result of the admitted breach\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A female teacher
