{"id":82829,"date":"2026-08-29T11:14:35","date_gmt":"2026-08-29T11:14:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/82829\/"},"modified":"2026-08-29T11:14:35","modified_gmt":"2026-08-29T11:14:35","slug":"sydney-ferries-strike-mua-to-stop-work-for-5hrs-in-pay-row","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/82829\/","title":{"rendered":"Sydney ferries strike: MUA to stop work for 5hrs in pay row"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sydney\u2019s iconic ferries will stay docked for most of Wednesday as staff launch industrial action, stopping work for five hours before giving commuters free rides home in an escalating row over pay and working conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Services across the harbour will be suspended between 9am and 2pm as members of the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) walk off the job to assemble for a meeting, taking action against private operator Transdev.<\/p>\n<p>Commuters travelling to and from Manly, Circular Quay, Parramatta and the rest of the Sydney fleet will be affected.<\/p>\n<p>The union has been negotiating with Transdev \u2013 who operate the Sydney fleet \u2013 over a better enterprise bargaining agreement, asking for a five per cent increase, plus a yearly increase to keep up with rising inflation. <\/p>\n<p>MUA Deputy Branch Secretary Paul Garrett apologised to commuters, but said they are \u201chappy to escalate to get this fixed,\u201d as workers have had to deal with a number of hurdles recently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur members worked through Covid, worked through 13 boats that were built overseas and weren\u2019t fit for purpose, and they\u2019re looking for a wage increase.
