while also being too ambiguous.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;What exactly is the problem the Greens are seeking to fix?&#8221; Mr Barnett wrote in the letter, obtained by the ABC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Tasmanian Law Reform Institute found in 2022 that &#8220;severe harm&#8221; had been caused by conversion practices, which refer to attempts to suppress or convert a person&#8217;s gender or sexual identity.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2022-05-17\/conversion-therapy-in-australia-calls-for-ban\/101041368\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Calls for conversion therapy ban<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Three Australians who underwent conversion &#8220;therapy&#8221;\u00a0to change their sexual orientation say there was nothing therapeutic about what happened to them, as they call for a ban on the practice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It found the practices were still happening in Tasmania, and recommended the state follow the lead of most other Australian states by outlawing them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">While the state government committed to banning the practices, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2023-12-14\/tasmania-gay-conversion-practices-ban-draft-bill-criticised\/103225522\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/103225522\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a 2023 bill introduced by the government was criticised for having &#8220;too many loopholes&#8221;,<\/a> and there has been no follow up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\"><a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-07-01\/conversion-practices-ban-bill-tasmanian-greens\/106856540\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106856540\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Greens released their own draft bill<\/a> in June this year, saying it would make a &#8220;profound difference&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Greens&#8217; bill &#8216;extreme&#8217;: Barnett<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In his letter to Women Speak Tasmania, Mr Barnett called the draft bill &#8220;amongst the most extreme of its type in Australia&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The draft Bill risks criminalising certain conversations between a parent and their child and conversations within families,&#8221; he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Sadly, the draft Bill risks criminalising conversations and or prayers in a church or religious setting.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\"><a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\" https:\/\/cppbilltas.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Conversion-Practices-Consultation-Draft.pdf\" data-component=\"Link\">The Greens&#8217;
