The news prompted relief and an outpouring of emotion.<\/p>\n

Michael Archer was walking through the halls of his primary school workplace when he received the call telling him he had landed a spot on Melbourne Renegades\u2019 list.<\/p>\n

The leg-spinner had already played a BBL game last summer, but he said being \u201cin it properly\u201d hit home.<\/p>\n

\u201c(A colleague) was the first person I saw, she thought something was wrong with me but I was actually just really happy,\u201d Archer said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI got in the car and called dad and my mum.\u201d<\/p>\n

Archer, 29, toiled away in Victorian Premier Cricket, first at Greenvale Kangaroos and then more successfully at Carlton.<\/p>\n

There were long drives from the country town of Tatura in regional Victoria and social sacrifices while chasing his dream.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou just think about it\u2019s a lot of hard work \u2013 when I was first started playing in Melbourne it was a lot of time in the car,\u201d Archer said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou miss mates\u2019 weddings and different events, you just hope that eventually something like that will happen.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was cool to play a game last year, but I just wanted to be in it properly for the whole time. It was pretty cool when I did find out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Archer said there were times he was \u201cemotional for the wrong reasons\u201d, doubting he would ever earn his opportunity.<\/p>\n

\u201c100 per cent,\u201d Archer said when asked if he ever had doubts.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy second year playing in Melbourne, I was at Greenvale. I was travelling to and from home, not bowling particularly well (and) I got dropped.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt times I was emotional for the wrong reasons, but I was lucky, I always had a lot of support from my partner, parents and I\u2019ve got awesome friends.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ve all encouraged me and when you feel you\u2019re doing it for people outside yourself, that encourages you to keep having a go.\u201d<\/p>\n

Archer\u2019s dad reacted to the news a similar way.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was just proud of me. My old man is not much of an emotional character but I got him before he went into a doctor\u2019s appointment,\u201d Archer said with a laugh.<\/p>\n

\u201cLike I said, I was a little bit emotional, so he went into the doctor\u2019s appointment. I don\u2019t know if there was a tear in his eye but the doctor had to ask if he was OK before they started.\u201d<\/p>\n

Archer\u2019s signing was announced a day after he took a Top End hat-trick for Victoria.<\/p>\n

The highlight of that hat-trick was his raging wrong-un and he plans to bring it out as much as he can in red this summer.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think my stock ball is amazing but I\u2019ve always been lucky to have a decent wrong-un \u2013 it\u2019s just the way it\u2019s worked out,\u201d Archer said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you start to have a little bit of success with it, I was like, \u2018Maybe I\u2019ve got something I can work with here\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just bowl it as often as I can because that\u2019s what my strength is. There\u2019s no point me going out in a one-game, for instance, and bowling 60 leg-spinners because that\u2019s not what my best ball is.<\/p>\n

\u201cI try and bowl it fairly often. It\u2019s something that works for me and there\u2019s no point going away from it.\u201d<\/p>\n
