{"id":83987,"date":"2026-08-31T07:57:27","date_gmt":"2026-08-31T07:57:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/83987\/"},"modified":"2026-08-31T07:57:27","modified_gmt":"2026-08-31T07:57:27","slug":"joyce-denies-one-nation-mp-david-farley-looking-to-jump-ship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/83987\/","title":{"rendered":"Joyce denies One Nation MP David Farley looking to jump ship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Barnaby Joyce has denied rumours One Nation\u2019s first elected federal MP is on the verge of quitting the party to serve as an independent over near-irreconcilable differences with the leadership team. <\/p>\n<p>David Farley won the seat of Farrer in a May by-election triggered by the resignation of former opposition leader Sussan Ley, who had quit a decades-long career in politics after being rolled in the top job.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Farley\u2019s win was a historic upset for the Coalition, which had held the seat since its inception in 1949, and proved to be One Nation\u2019s first big test with voters following a summer of polling highs. <\/p>\n<p>But Mr Farley \u2013 who pledged in his maiden speech to work with any political party trying to \u201cmake Australia stronger\u201d \u2013 has, in recent months, publicly clashed with leader Pauline Hanson.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, the Farrer MP defined One Nation\u2019s signature immigration platform \u2013 to cut net overseas migration to 130,000 \u2013 as similar to that of Labor\u2019s, arguing his party\u2019s figure excluded other forms of migration. <\/p>\n<p>These included temporary workers from the Pacific Islands, skilled workers, and backpackers, among others, which would add at least 100,000 people to the target, bringing One Nation\u2019s goalpost to 230,000, not far off Labor\u2019s target of 245,000 for 2026-27 and 225,000 for both 2027-28 and 2028-29.<\/p>\n<p>The remarks prompted a rebuke from Senator Hanson and a <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.news.com.au\/finance\/work\/at-work\/barnaby-joyces-palm-worker-claim-fuels-confusion-over-one-nation-target\/news-story\/b40c63f29ebd6baccc437d0317085a0c\" title=\"www.news.com.au\" data-tgev=\"event119\" data-tgev-container=\"bodylink\" data-tgev-order=\"b40c63f29ebd6baccc437d0317085a0c\" data-tgev-label=\"finance\" data-tgev-metric=\"ev\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">series of failed attempts <\/a>by both her and Mr Joyce to clarify the party\u2019s position. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"poster-img\" src=\"https:\/\/content.api.news\/v3\/images\/bin\/279f4b28340fff2e39a97d6bf2a84648\" data-sctrack=\"op-poster-img\" alt=\"David Farley concedes One Nation\u2019s migration target not too different from Labor\" fetchpriority=\"high\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Mr Farley, in the same ABC interview, also appeared to refuse to back Senator Hanson\u2019s promise to challenge a Federal Court ruling that she had breached section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act by telling Greens deputy leader Mehreen Faruqi to \u201cpiss off back to Pakistan\u201d in a social media post in 2022. <\/p>\n<p>Asked if he supported changing the Act, Mr Farley said: \u201cI\u2019m not convinced that we need to go and change anything at the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Over the weekend, The Saturday Paper reported that Mr Farley had confided in parliamentary colleagues that he was struggling to develop a working relationship with Mr Joyce, who has frequently used the Farrer MP\u2019s status as a \u201cnew\u201d member of parliament to justify the apparent missteps.<\/p>\n<p>But Mr Joyce on Monday told ABC Radio National he was unaware of any plan for Mr Farley to exit the team. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had a conversation with him nearly a day or so ago, and that was completely the opposite of what he said to me,\u201d the New England MP said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean, this is in every party, you have to go through the discussion, the process, and you know, and David is an incredibly important part of that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s incredibly competent, and you know \u2026 an asset to the party. And we want to make sure that we can we continue on with that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course the media have a lot of fun with people if they can smell blood on the water.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Two months prior to Mr Farley\u2019s appearance on the ABC, Senator Hanson confirmed she was forced to intervene after he reportedly planned to display three flags in his electorate office, the Australian, the Aboriginal and the Torres Strait Islander flags, contravening party policy.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Farley later issued a statement that his office would only fly the Australian flag in a position \u201cconsistent with One Nation policy\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>In the lead-up to his election in May, Mr Farley\u2019s past political allegiances came under intense scrutiny after Nine Newspapers reported he donated to and spent two
