{"id":84175,"date":"2026-08-31T13:59:29","date_gmt":"2026-08-31T13:59:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/84175\/"},"modified":"2026-08-31T13:59:29","modified_gmt":"2026-08-31T13:59:29","slug":"sa-man-who-wore-nazi-uniform-to-mcdonalds-avoids-jail-handed-two-year-good-behaviour-bond","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/84175\/","title":{"rendered":"SA man who wore Nazi uniform to McDonald&#8217;s avoids jail, handed two-year good behaviour bond"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A young South Australian man who shared extreme right-wing, antisemitic material online and attended a McDonald&#8217;s outlet dressed in a Nazi uniform has avoided jail time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Heath Duke, 20, appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Monday after previously pleading guilty to 16 counts of using a Nazi symbol or salute.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The court heard police had identified 97 public posts containing Nazi symbols that Duke had shared on the messaging platform Telegram between February and April this year. \u00ad\u00ad<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It also heard on May 25 this year, Duke attended McDonald&#8217;s at Collinswood \u2014 where he worked at the time \u2014 dressed in a Nazi uniform which featured swastikas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The prosecutor told the court witnesses observed him speaking German and &#8220;rehearsing a speech&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Members of the public appeared visibly concerned and one witness even reported to police that they were feeling that the defendant may harm somebody on the night,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The court heard when police later went to his home they found the uniform, as well as a large Nazi flag which was visible from a shared driveway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The prosecutor told the court Duke then breached a bail condition last month by accessing social media through a different account and posting content which &#8220;intended to glorify Hitler&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man is holding a bunch of sticks up in his hand.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/a69f8dd26c8557f5affb6945988dcbcb.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Police found a large Nazi flag at Heath Duke&#8217;s home. (Supplied: TikTok)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The court heard Duke \u2014 who appeared via video link \u2014 had experienced a &#8220;very difficult time&#8221; in the 11 days he had been in custody.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The court heard he had a long-standing autism diagnosis, suffered significant loneliness and presented a fixation of extreme right-wing beliefs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The defence lawyer told the court his client &#8220;identifies&#8221; with convicted criminal and leader of the neo-Nazi group National Socialist Network Thomas Sewell.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;He hasn&#8217;t had any contact with Mr Sewell before, he does wish to advocate for Thomas Sewell politically,&#8221; Duke&#8217;s lawyer said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Moving forward, he wishes to continue advocating for his own interests but he&#8217;ll project his beliefs in a different way.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Prison has had the salutary effect of waking him up to be more mindful and careful of what he&#8217;s sharing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">While acknowledging Duke&#8217;s behaviour was not acceptable in Australia, Magistrate Koula Kossiavelos also said she believed with the &#8220;right rehabilitation&#8221; the behaviour would not be repeated, noting he had no prior criminal history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;For the Jewish community in Australia, this would be a very sad case to see a young man whose 20 years of age and is fixated on issues that have been deep-felt for them and continue to be,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;You have political beliefs that are not shared in the community for good reason.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A stone building with large columns\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/a775e46e37cdd75e57115309f8b5b713.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Heath Duke appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court for sentencing.
