National icon Michelle Payne is about to become a first time mum and has backed a new campaign about the risks of drinking alcohol during pregnancy.<\/p>\n
Australia\u2019s first female Melbourne Cup winner said that although she wasn\u2019t actively planning a pregnancy, she hoped to become pregnant and tried to stay as healthy as possible before receiving the happy news.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was just trying to be as healthy as possible, fit and eating well,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m not naturally a big drinker, so that was just normal sort of routine for me.\u201d<\/p>\n
Payne has thrown her support behind a new DrinkWise campaign that warns women about the dangers of drinking alcohol during pregnancy and breastfeeding.<\/p>\n
\u201cFoetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is 100 per cent preventable, but it is not curable,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe message is crucial to every woman and mother to be who weren\u2019t aware of the disorder.\u201d<\/p>\n
FASD is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition caused by prenatal exposure to alcohol, according to the National Organisation for FASD.<\/p>\n
The disorder can affect brain development, behaviour, learning and health.<\/p>\n
People with FASD can experience challenges and require support with their motor skills, health, learning, memory, attention, communication, emotions and social skills.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn racing, preparation is everything. You can\u2019t control every outcome, but you can control the decisions you make in the lead-up \u2013 and pregnancy has made me think about that in a whole new way,\u201d Payne said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI always knew the advice was to not drink alcohol when planning a pregnancy or while pregnant, but learning more about FASD really reinforced why that advice matters. <\/p>\n
\u201cFor me, choosing not to drink is a simple decision as it means I\u2019m giving our baby the best start to life. If lending my voice gives even one woman more confidence in making that same choice, then it\u2019s absolutely worth it.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Royal Women\u2019s Hospital Fertility Specialist Chelsea Glennon said clear information about alcohol and pregnancy needed to reach women, partners and families before and during pregnancy.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy advice as an obstetrician is simple: FASD is 100 per cent preventable, so if you\u2019re pregnant or planning a pregnancy, don\u2019t drink alcohol. For women who are breastfeeding, not drinking alcohol is safest for their baby.\u201d<\/p>\n
New research shows while 89 per cent of Australian adults agree not drinking alcohol is one of the easiest ways to protect a baby\u2019s health during pregnancy, about 1 in 4 believe the occasional drink during pregnancy will not cause harm.<\/p>\n
DrinkWise Chief Executive Officer Simon Strahan said while Australians overwhelmingly support the advice not to drink during pregnancy, the research shows that understanding does not always translate into real-life decisions.<\/p>\n
\u201cAustralians overwhelmingly understand that not drinking alcohol helps protect a baby\u2019s health during pregnancy, but one in four still believes an occasional drink will not cause harm,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat tells us that the challenge isn\u2019t simply awareness. It\u2019s making sure the advice is followed in social situations too.<\/p>\n
