One Nation\u2019s thumping victory in a West Australian by-election has prompted the Nationals to warn of a \u201cmassive backlash\u201d from Australians towards federal Labor\u2019s economic agenda. <\/p>\n
The populist party\u2019s Luke Herdegen won the Secret Harbour contest on Saturday with a massive 17.5 per cent swing against Labor in a seat it had easily won last year. <\/p>\n
The win makes Mr Herdegen One Nation\u2019s first MP in the state\u2019s lower house. <\/p>\n
One Nation\u2019s increasing favourability with voters has proved a major challenge for the Liberals and Nationals, who have crashed in the polls as the populist party accelerates its campaign to target disaffected voters across the country. <\/p>\n
But Nationals leader Matt Canavan \u2013 who clashed with One Nation leader Pauline Hanson on the front lines of News Corp\u2019s Bush Summit last week <\/a>\u2013 insisted a Liberal-National partnership would be the \u201cbest alternative government\u201d and would not be drawn on a possible deal with One Nation.<\/p>\n He said Secret Harbour voters were frustrated with Anthony Albanese and Treasurer Jim Chalmers for having \u201clost control\u201d of the economy.<\/p>\n \u201cThe results we saw in Western Australia on the weekend are no doubt related to a massive backlash against this government\u2019s economic agenda,\u201d Senator Canavan told News24. <\/p>\n \u201cPeople are trying to send a message, but it doesn\u2019t seem like the Treasurer, the Prime Minister, or anyone in the Labor Party are getting the note.\u201d<\/p>\n The Prime Minister, in his first comments following One Nation\u2019s WA victory, on Sunday told Labor faithful in Queensland it was more \u201ccrucial\u201d than ever to defeat populism, a threat he described as peddling divisive politics around the world. <\/p>\n He accused One Nation, in particular, of having \u201cno serious answers to our problems\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cEvery time they achieve any success, it leads to chaos and division,\u201d Mr Albanese said.<\/p>\n This criticism was derided by One Nation chief of staff James Ashby, who described the federal government as \u201cdesperate\u201d. <\/p>\n \u201cThey know that no Labor seat is safe across this country after the by-election in Secret Harbor in Western Australia,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd rather than the Labor Party accepting they have a problem, they\u2019re now suggesting One Nation is the problem, which is just completely inaccurate.\u201d<\/p>\n Mr Ashby accused Mr Albanese of using language in his criticism that \u201cincited hate\u201d and directly linked his speech to \u201csome serious death threats\u201d targeting Senator Hanson. <\/p>\n But Attorney-General Michelle Rowland claimed One Nation needed to reflect on its own behaviour that she described as trading \u201con the politics of division\u201d. <\/p>\n \u201cI think some of One Nation\u2019s elements, particularly where they have been recruiting or otherwise giving a platform to extremist views \u2026 that is dangerous,\u201d Ms Rowland told ABC News Breakfast. <\/p>\n \u201cI think it is also dangerous, at a time when social cohesion has never been more important, to trade on the politics of division.\u201d<\/p>\n As of last month, Mr Albanese is subject to at least 20 ongoing court matters in which people are accused of making violent threats, mostly online or by phone, according to a Nine Newspapers report. <\/p>\n In November, the AFP warned there had been 951 referrals of threats to federal parliamentarians in 2024-25, rising 63 per cent over the past four years, in what officials have described as the most dangerous
