A man shot dead in a Sydney home invasion previously described as a “targeted” attack now appears to be a case of mistaken identity, New South Wales police commissioner says.<\/p>\n

Emergency services were called to a Glen Alpine home in the city’s south-west about 3:40am on Tuesday, after reports of a shooting<\/a>.<\/p>\n

NSW Police said university student Marco Tapia died at the scene and multiple offenders fled prior to officers arriving.<\/p>\n

Mr Tapia, who was in his 20s, was only known to police for a traffic offence.<\/p>\n

Family, who were home at the time, have been assisting police.<\/p>\n

After the incident, a social media post shared by underworld figure Iziah Utai said the offenders “popped the wrong person didn’t even get the right house” but Campbelltown City Police Area Command Acting Superintendent Gretchen Atkins said it was believed to be a “targeted attack”.<\/p>\n

When asked about the social media post and whether it related to that shooting, she did not rule out a case of mistaken identity and said “everything is being considered”.<\/p>\n

NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon said the shooting was “completely unacceptable” and now appeared to be a case of mistaken identity.<\/p>\n

“The fact that what appears to be an innocent life was taken yesterday is something that no community should accept and no community should live in fear of violence,” he said.<\/p>\n

It comes after several other people were mistakenly killed or injured<\/a> in underworld attacks.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Commissioner Lanyon said the community could take comfort in the police force’s continued and “relentless” efforts against organised crime networks.<\/p>\n

“For the past 12 months, we have arrested over 700 people connected with organised crime for committing offences exactly like we saw yesterday,” he said.<\/p>\n

“I don’t want any innocent member of the community to be impacted by organised crime. We will not tolerate it.”<\/p>\n

Police Minister Yasmin Catley said the shooting was “absolutely shocking”, but had confidence in police.<\/p>\n

“Police have described to us the model that our organised crime gangs have adopted in this state, and globally, quite frankly, and that is that fee for service,” she said.<\/p>\n

“Bringing in people who are just happy to commit a crime without understanding the consequences, and here we’ve seen again, allegedly, that we have somebody who is [targeted] from misidentification.”<\/p>\n

Asked about the killing during his four-day visit to India, <\/a>NSW Premier Chris Minns said the circumstances around the shooting were “shocking”.<\/p>\n

“I think it will reverberate for a long time, just the nature of it, the violent nature of it, is distressing for everyone that lives in Sydney,” he said.<\/p>\n
