A new four-lane road will be built through one of Brisbane\u2019s fastest-growing southern suburbs at a cost of more than $47m.<\/p>\n
A new 700-metre extension of Gardner Road in Rochedale – between Priestdale Road and Underwood Road – will include a new bridge with a wildlife crossing over the Bulimba Creek East Tributary, 2.5km of on-road bike lanes, 1.1km of shared paths and new footpaths.<\/p>\n
There will also be two new intersections with traffic lights and pedestrian crossings, including one at School Rd and Priestdale Rd.<\/p>\n
The new connection aims to provide easier access to Rochedale State High School and the Rochedale Bus Station and Park \u2018n\u2019 Ride. <\/p>\n
School access will be maintained throughout construction, with the design also providing an additional left-turn exit onto Gardner Rd. <\/p>\n
The road will run behind the Brisbane Gateway Resort tourist park.<\/p>\n
Planning and design has progressed for the project, with Brisbane City Council now seeking a construction partner to deliver it. <\/p>\n
The state government has committed $47 million towards the project through the Residential Activation Fund.<\/p>\n
Subject to the tender process, the final cost will be determined and construction is expected to begin next year.<\/p>\n
Between 2016 and 2021, Rochedale\u2019s population more than doubled from 3,000 to nearly 8000.<\/p>\n
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the new road would help unlock hundreds of new homes <\/p>\n
\u201cRochedale has grown rapidly and better roads and more homes go hand-in-hand as we plan for the future,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cGardner Road shows what\u2019s possible when all levels of government work together and we want to see more partnerships like this to deliver the infrastructure our growing city needs.\u201d <\/p>\n
Councillor Steven Huang said Rochedale has changed significantly in recent years, and the new road would provide better local connections for the growing community\u2019s needs. <\/p>\n
\u201cThis new connection will help take the pressure off surrounding roads and make it easier to get to school, work, local shops and public transport,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
