Brisbane\u2019s LGBTQIA+ calendar took a painful knock in 2026, with Big Gay Day nixed from the calendar. But if there is one thing our community has always been extraordinarily good at, it is adapting quicksmart, finding another dancefloor, and refusing to let disappointment have the final word.<\/p>\n

For a quarter of a century, Big Gay Day has been part of Brisbane\u2019s queer muscle memory: a sprawling, sweaty Fortitude Valley street party where chosen family reunites, drag queens rule the stage and an ordinary patch of city becomes unmistakably ours.<\/p>\n

Established at The Wickham in 2000 as a celebration and fundraiser, it grew into one of Brisbane\u2019s biggest LGBTQIA+ parties, bringing in local, national and international acts.<\/p>\n

That history is precisely why, organiser Harry K tells Star Observer, that postponing,<\/a> rather than offering the community a diminished version, mattered.<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes the hardest decision is the right decision,\u201d said Harry.<\/p>\n

\u201cBig Gay Day has been such an important part of Brisbane\u2019s gay landscape for 25 years, so the decision to postpone this year\u2019s event until 2027 certainly wasn\u2019t made lightly.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCosts have skyrocketed across the board and there are a number of other challenges that come with producing a major outdoor event in Fortitude Valley.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Harry said the team would instead take the time needed to bring Big Gay Day back \u201cbigger and gayer and more fabulous\u201d in 2027.<\/p>\n

The Wickham<\/a> thanked everyone involved, a spokesperson saying the news was disappointing, but \u201cwe look forward to Big Gay Day\u2019s return in 2027.\u201d As a part of Big Gay Day, the venue annually donates money to local LGBTQIA+ charities \u2013 they confirmed that despite the event taking a year off, they\u2019d still donate $10,000 each to 2Spirits and Open Doors Youth Service.<\/p>\n

But mercifully, nobody is being ordered to spend the King\u2019s Birthday long weekend sitting quietly at home. The queers did what queers do best \u2013 pivoted, took that joy and fashioned it into a different formation.<\/p>\n

Enter, the GAY OUT Block Party, which will take over The Wickham on 4 October<\/a>, filling three arenas with music and entertainment before the official after-party moves to The Warehouse. That is more than 12 hours of carrying on, which should keep Brisbane respectably homosexual.<\/p>\n

Nor does the season end when that hangover does. Between Brisbane Pride Festival and MELT Festival, there are more events than ever before.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Brisbane Pride Festival runs from 26 September to 31 October. The signature Rally and March are on 24 October, seeing the community gather in Fortitude Valley before travelling to New Farm Park, where the iconic Fair Day will be held.<\/p>\n

MELT begins its huge opening weekend the same day, with the twilight River Pride Parade led by Florentijn Hofman\u2019s 15-metre hot-pink duck and party boats on the river.<\/p>\n

Across MELT\u2019s 100-plus events at more than 70 venues are the inaugural Mr First Nation, Circa\u2019s immersive world premiere Show Me Love, concerts from Jude York, TEEKS, Courtney Barnett and Melanie C, the glorious Queer PowerPoint, The Huxleys\u2019 Bloodlines, and a Trans Theatre Symposium centring the future of trans storytelling.<\/p>\n

Losing Big Gay Day hurt, of course. But this year\u2019s Pride season in Brisbane is a choose-your-own-adventure that\u2019s bigger and gayer than ever: music, protest, art, community togetherness, queer excellence, a ridiculously oversized pink waterfowl, and many, many opportunities to dance.<\/p>\n
