The Heritage Council of WA is seeking feedback on adding the former Perry Lakes scoreboard to its State Register of Heritage Places.<\/p>\n
It cites its cultural heritage significance as the only remaining element from the now-demolished Perry Lakes Stadium in Floreat, which was built ahead of Perth\u2019s hosting of the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games.<\/p>\n
Residential development now covers the former stadium site but the scoreboard remains, surrounded by apartments on Stadium Drive.<\/p>\n
The three-storey brick building was designed in the Post-War International style and refurbished in 2016 alongside surrounding development.<\/p>\n

According to the council, the scoreboard is valued for its association with one of WA\u2019s most significant events in the post-World War II period.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Games form part of Western Australians\u2019 social memories of the 1960s and marked the State\u2019s \u2018coming of age\u2019 through hosting a major event on the international stage. Registration will celebrate this significant State story,\u201d the supporting statement said.<\/p>\n
Inclusion on the register will not preclude changes to the building but the council would provide advice on any development proposals, including major works to the surrounding apartments.<\/p>\n
