And it all has its place.

Bistro Tino’s point of difference is that it’s none of these things.

There’s no pancake stack, scrambled eggs or smashed avo, and they are not trying to break the internet.

Bistro Tino is in concert with what Mark Rotolone has long established at his popular next-door Italian restaurant Mosconi – quality ingredients, elevated dishes in an understated bistro-style fit-out. It’s elegant and European.

Acclaimed Brisbane bar’s new Mexican fusion menu is a surprising misstep

Tony Kelly’s Piggyback masters complex flavours in a casual hinterland hideaway

On a busy Saturday morning, we wait outside for a table as diners on the footpath relax on cream-and-chocolate Parisian chairs around white, round cafe tables. It’s walk-in only, and with every table full we are told the wait will be 20 minutes.

But in a stroke of luck a two-seater immediately becomes available inside, where an L-shaped light mustard bench seat lines two walls, tucked in with round tables and dark mahogany bentwood chairs.

Above the bench seats, ripe heirloom tomatoes sit piled on a plate at a high counter past which a narrow window gives a glimpse of the kitchen, which is being helmed by Alfie Cutler, under the direction of Mosconi head chef Catherine Anders.

Brick walls are painted a pale lemon and a wood veneer bar and flooring complete the warm aesthetic.

Morning light floods through large windows where tall bentwood barstools line a narrow bench overlooking the street.

Behind this a barista and coffee machine work overtime on coffee orders. Customers can order a standing espresso for $2.

Coffees are ordered: a long black and almond flat white from Single O coffee’s Yeehah! blend, which is rich with caramel hints and is served medium strength and very smooth.

The 12-dish menu includes granola de luxe with buffalo yoghurt and seasonal fruit; fried brioche with honey ricotta and vincotto strawberries; raw yellowfin tuna with anchovy butter, salsa verde and sourdough; pan con tomate; Italian sausage, silverbeet, butter beans and baguette; and a lemon chicken baby gem salad. There’s potato and zucchini frittata ($32) with blue swimmer crab and creme fraiche that features the vegetables thinly sliced inside an impossibly light omelette with generous kisses of herby delicate crab and decorated with micro greens and dill sprigs. So good.

Also without fault is Abruzzese ham ($28), which is lightly peppered and served with a soft egg, Comte, pickled vegies (tiny pieces of squash, cauliflower, fennel, spring onions), tomato relish and seeded bread. Dishes are served on traditional scalloped porcelain plates.

For a sweet finish, treats at the counter include chocolate brownies, biscotti, chocolate croissants and cannoli ($8). The latter is a perfect bite to end on and pairs well with a long black. The delicate, crunchy pastry roll is filled with subtly sweet cream and mascarpone, with the ends dipped in peanut brittle.

The drinks list is a roll-call of standard coffee pours, four choices of Somage Pyramid tea in English breakfast, peppermint, lemongrass and a licorice, fennel and peppermint, as well as three choices of juice, chinotto and limonata.

Those wanting a boozy brunch have the choice of seven cocktails including cappuccino martini and bloody mary, as well as a mimosa and Margaine cuvee tradionelle Champagne by the glass or bottle, and three beers.

Tino is also open Friday afternoon and evening as a walk-in for aperitino and snacks, with a selection of spritz and a few dishes from the brunch menu as well as Pacific oysters.

Service is casual but thoughtful enough that we don’t wait long for meals and our bevelled glass tumblers are regularly topped up.

A brunch and aperitino offering feels like a natural expansion for the Mosconi team and customers are in good hands.

Bistro Tino
164C Arthur St, Fortitude
