He was no longer cutting edge.

“It’s quite clear North Melbourne never got the best of Alastair Clarkson.

“It’s been a grim rebuild.”

Garry Lyon said there was “a savage brutality to that press conference”.

“It is jarring to hear reference made to the modern game,” the Demons great said.

“But if that’s the way they see it … This is a man who for much of his career was that far ahead of the modern game that he redefined it.”

Lyon added: “The fire that I’ve seen flickered occasionally but it didn’t seem to burn with the same intensity that he had when he was at his peak.

“He might be lost to the game forever.”

Two-time premiership winning Kangaroo David King believes Hood and Viney went too far in publicly detailing the reasons for parting ways with Clarkson.

“The simple fact is Clarko got old,” King said on SEN’s Fireball podcast.

“I knew something was looming to a point where either Clarko was going to blow the place up, which we know he can. Or they were going to take this action.

“I think they said too much. I thought they went too far. You don’t need to explain everything. I don’t like it on the way out. A guy gives you four years of his life, yes you’re paying him for that service.

“But just say ‘We needed him, he did as good as he could, we’ve decided now we’re stable enough, no one’s left, and we can charge forward with someone fresh’.

“I don’t think he lost the players. He was the right person at the time.

“I command them on being brave enough to make this call. It’s about getting the next decision right.”

“It was a brutal press conference,” Kane Cornes said. “It was honest. He’s lost the playing group, his game plan was outdated.

“It’s the right move. There’s no point wasting because we’ve seen what Josh Fraser and Steven King can do.

“There’s no point keeping a coach in the chair when you’ve lost confidence in him as a footy club. This is the right course of action.

“He (Viney) said someone who’s up with the modern game. That’s a gigantic whack at Clarko.”

“The Alastair Clarkson camp, and Alastair Clarkson himself, are seething about the way the media conference played out today at North Melbourne,” reporter Tom Morris said on Channel 7’s Agenda Setters.

2018 Brownlow Medalist Tom Mitchell, who played under Clarkson at Hawthorn, disagreed with North’s decision to sack the coach.

“In terms of performance, they were much more competitive this year and heading in the right direction,” Mitchell said on Channel 7.

“It was a pretty strong press conference. ‘Confused messaging, game plan and delegating’.

“I find game plan a tough one to get my head around. He’s been the most innovative coach of the last two decades. He’s always innovating. Even chatting to the younger North guys last week, he’s still one of the smartest guys out there in terms of his footy brain. I find that hard to agree with.”

“There’s just no perfect way to sack a coach, is there?” King said on Kayo Sports’ First Crack Preview.

“It’s a tough time for those in charge of a football club; you’re charged with these responsibilities, so ultimately you’ve got to be able to make these calls.

“I think the ideas and the notions were correct, and the intention was there to handle this with respect and care, given that Alastair had given four years of his life to a club that was on its knees when you had to have someone with strength come in and put the hard hat on and wear the bullets for the football club.

“And I just don’t know if they nailed it today. I just feel like some of the wording leaves a little stamp on the way out.

“But I think that there is no perfect way to do it, and sometimes saying less is the best way.

“To talk about coaching the modern way, rifts at the club, delegating — and just picking apart (someone) who has been an icon of our game.”

<img decoding="async" class="poster-img" src="https://www.europesays.com/australia/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/880188733accfd68b126f0ef7dde7c24.jpeg" data-sctrack="op-poster-img" alt="Clarko SACKED! Can they deliver the promised premiership? Something that’s been successful, recreated in a new environment.”

“Things change quickly,” Lyon said.

“There’s a group of coaches of a similar vintage who’ve been challenged by the game. They may or may not come through it.

“We are in a state of change, there’s no question about it. The game doesn’t stand still.”

The Kangaroos said they do not have a “preconceived idea” on who would take over as coach and plan to announce the hiring process next week.
