{"id":87229,"date":"2026-09-03T13:40:32","date_gmt":"2026-09-03T13:40:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/87229\/"},"modified":"2026-09-03T13:40:32","modified_gmt":"2026-09-03T13:40:32","slug":"warm-seas-near-australia-could-counteract-el-ninos-drying-effect-this-spring","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/87229\/","title":{"rendered":"Warm seas near Australia could counteract El Ni\u00f1o\u2019s drying effect this spring"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A climatic tug-of-war between a strengthening El Ni\u00f1o and unusually warm water surrounding Australia could cause striking weather contrasts across Australia this spring and summer.<\/p>\n<p>El Ni\u00f1o strengthening<\/p>\n<p>El Ni\u00f1o has been gaining strength in the tropical Pacific Ocean over the last few months after it was officially declared by the Bureau of Meteorology in June.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of August, the relative Ni\u00f1o 3.4 index \u2013 a measure of sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in the central tropical Pacific Ocean and a key oceanic index for monitoring El Ni\u00f1o \u2013 had reached +2.45\u00b0C. This is well above Australia&#8217;s El Ni\u00f1o declaration threshold of +0.8\u00b0C.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/rNino3.4 SST Index (1).png\" alt=\"Weekly relative Ni\u00f1o 3.4 index.\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Image: Weekly relative Ni\u00f1o 3.4 index. Source: Weatherzone.<\/p>\n<p>Forecast models predict this El Ni\u00f1o event will continue to strengthen through the southern hemisphere&#8217;s spring. Some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bom.gov.au\/climate\/ocean\/outlooks\/?index=nino34#tabs=Graphs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">forecast models<\/a> suggest it could rival or exceed the strongest El Ni\u00f1o events on record, and should peak in late spring or early summer, before weakening early next year.<\/p>\n<p>El Ni\u00f1o can have a big influence on Australia&#8217;s weather and is typically associated with:<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nBelow average rainfall over large areas of Australia during winter and spring. However, its influence on rainfall is typically weaker in summer and autumn.&#13;<br \/>\nAbove average maximum temperatures for most areas outside the tropics, particularly during the second half of the year.&#13;<br \/>\nMore intense daily heat extremes in southern Australia, but with a reduced frequency of prolonged heatwaves.&#13;<br \/>\nAn increased risk of dangerous fire days in southeastern Australia as temperatures rise in spring and summer.&#13;<br \/>\nDecreased seasonal peak alpine snow depths and a shorter snow season.&#13;<\/p>\n<p>El Ni\u00f1o not acting alone<\/p>\n<p>One important thing to note about El Ni\u00f1o is that it does not act alone. Other influences, such as the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), Southern Annular Mode (SAM) and sea surface temperatures near Australia can all affect how El Ni\u00f1o impacts Australia\u2019s weather. In some cases, these other influences can enhance the impact of El Ni\u00f1o in Australia and in other cases, they can counteract it.<\/p>\n<p>One thing that is currently influencing Australia\u2019s weather alongside El Ni\u00f1o is warmer than average seas around much of the country.<\/p>\n<p>El Ni\u00f1o can reduce rainfall over Australia by weakening the trade winds that blow moisture-laden air towards the country from the tropical Pacific Ocean. However, warmer-than-average water near Australia can supply the atmosphere with additional moisture via enhanced evaporation, which can counteract the drying influence of El Ni\u00f1o.<\/p>\n<p>At the beginning of September, sea surface temperatures were running around 0.5\u20131\u00b0C above average around most of Australia, with parts of the Tasman Sea running 2\u20133\u00b0C above average for this time of year.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/sst_anom_australia_20260901.png\" alt=\"Sea surface temperature anomalies near Australia on September 1, 2026. Source: Bureau of Meteorology.<\/p>\n<p>Forecast models predict that water temperatures will become even warmer than average during spring. According to the Bureau of Meteorology, \u201cSSTs across most of the Australian region are forecast to warm over the coming months, particularly to Australia&#8217;s west. Warmer waters can enhance atmospheric moisture and energy that can fuel storms and rain systems, increasing potential for high intensity rainfall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The map below shows forecast sea surface temperature anomalies in the Australian region in November 2026. Source: Weatherzone.<\/p>\n<p>Mixed impacts as El Ni\u00f1o and locally warm oceans interact<\/p>\n<p>The contrasting influences of El Ni\u00f1o and unusually warm water near Australia are already causing mixed weather impacts across the country.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past three months, parts of southern and central Australia experienced winter rainfall in the top 10% of historical records. Some areas in South Australia and New South Wales even had their wettest winter on record.<\/p>\n<p>By contrast, winter rainfall was below average across eastern parts of Queensland, NSW, Victoria and Tasmania, and southwest WA. Parts of SA, the NT and WA registered near-average maximum temperatures in winter, while temperatures were well above average in eastern and northern Australia. Source: Bureau of Meteorology.<\/p>\n<p>Looking ahead, Australia should continue seeing contrasting weather impacts as El Ni\u00f1o gains strength in the Pacific Ocean and local sea surface temperature anomalies become even more positive to the east and west of the country.<\/p>\n<p>Long-range forecasts from the Bureau show that parts of western, northern and central Australia could see above average rain this spring, while drier than average weather is predicted for southeastern Australia, southwest WA, parts of eastern and northern Queensland and the NT\u2019s Top End.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/spring2026_rainfall_outlook_bom.png\" alt=\"Spring 2026 rainfall outlook according to the Bureau of Meteorology\u2019s ACCESS-S model. Source: Bureau of Meteorology.<\/p>\n<p>This outlook appears to reflect the increasing influence of moisture being sourced from unusually warm water in the Indian Ocean to the west of Australia in the coming months.<\/p>\n<p>Meteorologists will be closely watching the development of El Ni\u00f1o and local sea surface temperatures in the coming months to see how these competing forces will affect Australia\u2019s weather in spring and summer.
