Retired radio star Ray Hadley claims he was targeted by Alan Jones after his then-colleague dubbed him disloyal for going after his coveted breakfast timeslot, in his final pieces of evidence before Jones\u2019 indecent assault trial<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In his third and final day in the witness box, Hadley discussed his \u201ccomplicated\u201d 35-year relationship with Jones, who stands accused of kissing and touching the penis and buttocks of six com\u00adplainants between 2003 and 2020.<\/p>\n

Although he said he probably harboured animosity towards Jones, Hadley refuted the defence\u2019s claim he was trying to \u201cdestroy\u201d Jones by colluding with Complainant C, one of the six alleged victims in the case.<\/p>\n

Hadley claimed Jones was set on bringing him down well before C\u2019s allegations were published by the Sydney Morning Herald in December 2019. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d been targeted by Mr Jones when he found out that I\u2019d signed a contract to take his position, even though I never took his position,\u201d Hadley said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was targeting me because he thought I was disloyal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hadley told the court his former rival had asked 2GB staff to \u201cdig up dirt\u201d on him after he signed a \u201csecret contract\u201d to take over Jones\u2019 breakfast show in December 2018.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnything they could to white ant me, white ant my program, just generally make life more difficult for me,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The court heard the former radio rivals had a \u201cvery complicated\u201d relationship.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were both under tremendous pressure constantly to deliver and, as a result, it was a tumultuous relationship, sometimes warm and friendly and sometimes hostile,\u201d Hadley said.<\/p>\n

Asked why he sent Jones friendly texts, including things like \u201clove, Hadley\u201d and \u201c35 years is a long time old mate\u201d in 2019 and 2020, Hadley said it was \u201ccommon courtesy\u201d because Jones had sent a kind message first.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur relationship was very complicated. We went from being very close to very distant. He was gracious. I returned it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Hadley said much of his success as a broadcaster was due to Jones and he was \u201cappreciative of what he did for me\u201d.<\/p>\n

In saying that, he added that they also had \u201cstand-up brawls\u201d and Jones had said in the past \u201che\u2019d never work with me again\u201d.<\/p>\n

In her re-examination, prosecutor Georgina Wright SC took Hadley to a text read aloud in court on Wednesday, in which he told C that Jones \u201cneeds to be destroyed\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Asked to clarify why he said that, Hadley said the rest of the message read \u201cfor what he did to you\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was in reference to the proceedings we\u2019re here about at the moment,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI said I\u2019d stick by him (C) and I\u2019d support him in every way, no matter what course of action he decided to take, and that\u2019s why I\u2019m here today.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the last part of her cross-examination of Hadley, Jones\u2019 barrister, Gabrielle Bashir SC, suggested he had given untrue evidence about the conversation he had with Complainant C in October 2019, when the young man first alleged Jones had assaulted him.<\/p>\n

Hadley said he rejected that entirely.<\/p>\n

Ms Bashir also probed him on his contact with columnist Peter FitzSimons around that time. <\/p>\n

Hadley agreed that in addition to the phone call he facilitated between FitzSimons and C, he had two further calls with the journalist in October 2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think he was pressing me on the identity of (C)\u2019 at the time. I wouldn\u2019t tell them (the Sydney Morning Herald),\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Hadley also confirmed he had several other conversations with C in October 2019, but said that was because the man was \u201cin a fragile state\u201d.<\/p>\n

On his way out of court, Hadley spoke briefly to the media but said he couldn\u2019t answer any questions for fear of jeopardising the trial.<\/p>\n

Hadley made his first appearance as a witness in Jones\u2019s trial<\/a> on Tuesday, when he was questioned about alle\u00adgations Jones repeatedly kissed and touched Complainant C<\/a>. <\/p>\n

The alleged victim, who worked at 2GB, is one of six complainants who have accused Jones of assault. <\/p>\n

Jones has pleaded not guilty to all 20 counts of indecent assault and two counts of sexual touching levelled against him.<\/p>\n
