Sydney to hit 30C this weekend as mixed bag of weather smashes Aus

Millions of Aussies will have their first taste of Spring this weekend – with temperatures soaring for one half of the country, while others brave freezing and conditions.

A massive and powerful cold front is forecast to blanket the southern states while the north is hit by hot and windy conditions.

The mercury will be climbing for those in the country’s east, as a low level trough brings warm and windy weather to parts of NSW and southern and eastern Queensland.

Brisbane will feel the heat this weekend, with the mercury tipped to hit 35C on Sunday.

“I was very surprised to see that in the forecast this early in spring,” Angus Hines from the Bureau of Meteorology told NewsWire.

“(It’s) pretty remarkably warm weather there.”

A burst of heat will also splash Sydney on Saturday, with temperatures forecast to reach 31C for the first time this season.

Temperatures will climb even higher in the west, with Penrith, Parramatta and Richmond forecast to hit between 32C and 33C on Saturday.

Mr Angus Hines said the scorching temperatures had arrived “a little early for spring”.

With the scorching conditions also comes bouts of severe wind in the state’s south east, which are forecast to impact Illawarra and parts of South Coast, Central Tablelands, Southern Tablelands, South West Slopes, the Snowy Mountains, as well as the Australian Capital Territory forecast districts.

The strong north-westerly wind will develop on Saturday morning, with speeds averaging 70km/h and gusts of up to 100km/h in the Blue and Snowy Mountains.

Mr Hines said the warm and windy weather created ideal conditions for bushfires.

“Since winter we haven’t really had many sort of surges of elevated fire danger, but we’ll be seeing that in Sydney tomorrow with that hot day,” he told NewsWire.

“It’s also really windy around the Sydney area so we do have extreme fire danger in the forecast for (Saturday).”

Meanwhile, a “powerful” cold front will sweep the other half of the country, bringing with it a band of thunderstorms, rain and very strong winds.

“The impacts of that are going to be felt fairly extensively,” Mr Hines said.

“We’re talking most of Victoria, most of Tasmania, about the southern half of South Australia and then quite a lot of southern inland New South Wales.”

Severe wind warnings are in place for the South West and parts of Central, East Gippsland, North East, West and South Gippsland, Wimmera and North Central Forecast Districts.

Beginning on Friday evening, a large band of rain is set to sweep over the states, which won’t settle until Saturday.

“We’ve already got some damaging wind warnings in play for pretty broad regions extending from South Australia across the New South Wales,” he told NewsWire.

He said the band of rain would bring “really gusty conditions”, which will kick off on Friday.

Mr Hines told NewsWire there would be “plenty of rain and thunderstorms” across Victoria, with the risk of severe thunderstorms in Melbourne on Friday evening.

“So it really could be a bit of a woolly 24 hours or so, starting from (Friday night) continuing into Saturday afternoon and evening,” he said.

The weekend ahead

Residents in Brisbane are set for a scorching weekend, with clear skies and temperatures forecast to hit 29C on Saturday and 35C on Sunday.

It will be a windy and warm Saturday for Sydney, with temperatures reaching 31C on Saturday before dropping to a cooler 23C on Sunday.

Conditions will be cool and wet for Canberra on Saturday, reaching a maximum of 19C before heating up to 19C on Sunday.

It will be chilly for residents in Melbourne on the weekend, with a high chance of showers and a top of 19C on Saturday, before dropping even further to 17C on Sunday.

Hobart will be chilly on Saturday, with a very high chance of rain and a maximum temperature of 15C, climbing slightly to 16C on Sunday.

Showers will ease in Adelaide on Saturday, with a forecast maximum temperature of 17C on Saturday and Sunday.

Perth will be cloudy on Saturday and Sunday, with showers and a top of 20C.

Darwin will see a medium chance of showers on Saturday and Sunday, with both days forecast to see a maximum temperature of 32C.

Read
