Former Queensland police commissioner Steve Gollschewski has died following a \u201ccourageous\u201d battle with cancer.<\/p>\n
Mr Gollschewski served with Queensland Police Service for more than 46 years and was the state\u2019s third-longest-serving police officer.<\/p>\n
He retired from the police force in February.<\/p>\n
His colleagues have remembered him for his extraordinary contribution to policing, defined by principled leadership, integrity and enduring dedication.<\/p>\n
Acting Commissioner of Police Brett Pointing said Mr Gollschewski was a strategic and visionary leader, respected for his courage, professionalism and unwavering commitment to community safety.<\/p>\n
\u201cThroughout his distinguished career, Steve was a remarkable strategist and contemporary leader, disciplined in his thinking, measured in his decisions and guided by deeply held personal values,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cSteve was admired by many for his judgment, foresight and deep understanding of policing, and his impact will continue to be felt across Queensland, nationally and internationally for many years to come.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe will be remembered as an exceptional leader who used insight and innovation to strengthen the organisation and help keep the community safe.<\/p>\n
\u201cSteve\u2019s legacy of service, courage, integrity and dedication will be remembered with great respect and gratitude by the many people and communities influenced by him.\u201d<\/p>\n
Premier David Crisafulli also paid tribute to the top cop saying Queenslanders would be deeply saddened to hear of the passing of the former commissioner.<\/p>\n
He said the long serving officer devoted his life to the police service, upholding Queensland\u2019s laws and making the state a safer place. <\/p>\n
\u201cQueenslanders will remember his exemplary leadership, during some of the State\u2019s most difficult challenges,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe spent more than four decades serving with remarkable dedication and integrity, leaving behind a legacy of outstanding contribution to policing and community safety.<\/p>\n
\u201cOn behalf of all Queensland, we extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time.\u201d<\/p>\n
Minister for Police and Emergency Services Dan Purdie said Mr Gollschewski would be remembered as one of Australia\u2019s most respected police leaders.<\/p>\n
\u201c(He) was instrumental and relentless in his pursuit to reform the QPS and make Queensland safer,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cOn behalf of the Crisafulli Government, I extend my heartfelt condolences to his wife Rebecca and his children,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
