Darryl Young has been found guilty of murdering three neighbours in a shooting at the front gate of his rural Queensland property.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The jury also found the 63-year-old guilty of\u00a0attempting\u00a0to murder Ross Tighe, the sole survivor of the shooting.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Young had faced four charges over the deaths of Mervyn Schwarz, his wife Maree\u00a0Schwarz\u00a0and her son Graham Tighe at his\u00a0Shannonvale\u00a0property in Bogie on August 4, 2022.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The verdicts bring an end to a four-week trial that began in Townsville Supreme Court last month.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Young stood in the dock without showing emotion as the verdicts were delivered.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The victims’ family members\u00a0cheered,\u00a0cried\u00a0and clapped as the jury found Young guilty of the three murders.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Jurors had begun deliberating on Wednesday after hearing evidence from more than 30 witnesses.\u00a0<\/p>\n
They returned to court on Friday after more than 14 hours of deliberations.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Justice Christopher Johnstone had earlier told the jury they could return a majority verdict of 11 jurors if they could not reach a unanimous decision on the attempted murder charge.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The jury returned\u00a0a short time\u00a0later with the verdict.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The case centred on a meeting Young arranged with his neighbours at the front gate of\u00a0Shannonvale\u00a0Station.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The prosecution alleged the meeting was linked to Young’s belief that the family had been stealing his cattle.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The jury found Young pulled a rifle from the back seat of his\u00a0ute\u00a0after the family arrived.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He then declared, \u201cI\u2019ll end this once and for all\u201d before shooting Mervyn in the head.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Maree and Graham were also shot dead.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Police later found all three bodies at the property gate.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Ross was also shot but survived.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He told the court he ran from the scene and hid in long grass after being wounded.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He later returned to where his family members had been killed before escaping in a vehicle.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The prosecution alleged\u00a0Young\u00a0shot Ross in the stomach as he tried to flee.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Young denied being at the front gate when the shooting happened.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He gave evidence during the trial and told the jury he was surprised to learn about the killings.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The prosecution’s case was that Young had arranged the meeting before carrying out the attack.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The defence challenged the account given by Ross and questioned whether his evidence could be relied upon.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Ross\u00a0remained\u00a0a central witness throughout the trial.\u00a0<\/p>\n
His evidence was also examined by Justice Johnstone before the jury began considering its verdict.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The court heard that Young spent the rest of the day with workers from a wind farm who were carrying out testing on his property.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He also posed for a selfie with the workers and gave the camera a thumbs up.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The killings occurred more than four years before Young’s trial began.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Proceedings started in Townsville on August 10, 2026, just days after the anniversary of the shooting.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The case has involved extensive evidence about the events leading up to the meeting, the shooting itself and what happened afterwards.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The jury\u00a0was ultimately required\u00a0to\u00a0determine\u00a0whether Young\u00a0was responsible for\u00a0the deaths and whether he intended to kill Ross.\u00a0<\/p>\n
It has now found him guilty on all four charges.\u00a0<\/p>\n
