{"id":8878,"date":"2026-05-11T03:11:15","date_gmt":"2026-05-11T03:11:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/8878\/"},"modified":"2026-05-11T03:11:15","modified_gmt":"2026-05-11T03:11:15","slug":"isis-widows-kawsar-abbas-zeinab-ahmad-to-face-melbourne-court-bail-hearing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/8878\/","title":{"rendered":"ISIS widows Kawsar Abbas, Zeinab Ahmad to face Melbourne court bail hearing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ISIS widows and accused slave owners Kawsar Abbas and her daughter Zeinab Ahmad will be remanded in custody after shelving plans for an immediate bail bid over allegations they enslaved Yazidi women under the Islamic State caliphate in Syria.<\/p>\n<p>They had been expected to launch an application for release from custody in the Melbourne Magistrates Court, where prosecutors were preparing to outline a summary of the alleged offending.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, Monday\u2019s hearing is now expected to deal with procedural matters, with bail no longer to be sought at this stage.<\/p>\n<p>It comes just days after accused terrorist <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theaustralian.com.au\/nation\/politics\/father-of-isis-bride-tried-to-stop-syria-trip\/news-story\/40bcdcd28a02ec0d9649efb99be88baa\" target=\"_blank\" data-tgev=\"event119\" data-tgev-container=\"bodylink\" data-tgev-order=\"40bcdcd28a02ec0d9649efb99be88baa\" data-tgev-label=\"nation\" data-tgev-metric=\"ev\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Janai Safar<\/a> was refused bail in Sydney despite claims separating her from her nine-year-old son would be \u201cparticularly traumatic\u201d after years detained in a Syrian camp. <\/p>\n<p>The legal battles mark the first major court test for the Australian women repatriated from the al-Roj detention camp in northeast Syria after the collapse of Islamic State.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Abbas, 54, and her daughter Zeinab were arrested by the Victorian Joint Counter Terrorism Team moments after landing at Melbourne Airport on Thursday night last week following their dramatic return to Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Police allege Ms Abbas travelled to Syria in 2014 with her husband and children and helped purchase a Yazidi woman for $US10,000 before knowingly keeping the woman as a slave in the family home.<\/p>\n<p>She has been charged with four crimes against humanity offences: enslavement, possessing a slave, using a slave and engaging in slave trading. Each offence carries a maximum penalty of 25 years\u2019 imprisonment.<\/p>\n<p>Zeinab is also accused of keeping a Yazidi woman as a slave after travelling to Syria with her family in 2014. She has been charged with enslavement and using a slave, offences also carrying maximum penalties of 25 years in prison.<\/p>\n<p>Another of Ms Abbas\u2019 daughters, Zahra Ahmad, was released into the community and had not been charged with any offences after landing in Melbourne.<\/p>\n<p>During their first court appearance on Friday, high-profile criminal defence lawyer Bill Doogue indicated both women would apply for a bail on Monday.
