{"id":88859,"date":"2026-09-05T14:36:20","date_gmt":"2026-09-05T14:36:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/88859\/"},"modified":"2026-09-05T14:36:20","modified_gmt":"2026-09-05T14:36:20","slug":"riverfire-2026-crowds-pack-brisbane-early-on-29-degree-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/88859\/","title":{"rendered":"Riverfire 2026: Crowds pack Brisbane early on 29-degree day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Traffic in Brisbane CBD is largely at a standstill as thousands leave Brisbane\u2019s annual Riverfire celebrations, with hundreds of people lined up along the river hours before the show.<\/p>\n<p>Brisbane CBD was in gridlock after the fireworks ended. <\/p>\n<p>Traffic was largely at a standstill as people tried to leave the city by car, and large crowds gathered at south bank bus station trying to get home. <\/p>\n<p>There was a large police presence on queen street mall near George street, after cops were called to a disturbance.<\/p>\n<p>One man has been detained.<\/p>\n<p>Thousands secured their Riverfire vantage spots this morning and by midday on Saturday, the best spots in Brisbane were taken. <\/p>\n<p>The most sought after areas were away from the sun as the day hit a high of 29C.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"poster-img\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/44a3c402c13d2ba5f1349ef006fb66c0.jpeg\" data-sctrack=\"op-poster-img\" alt=\"Riverfire 2026 grand finale in Brisbane\" fetchpriority=\"high\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Tanya Small and Mark Coleman from Redcliffe set up camp in Southbank at 7am. <\/p>\n<p>They said they get to the area early every year to get the best spot for filming the fireworks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve had to move from our usual spot, just cause it\u2019s so incredibly hot this year and we needed to be in the shade,\u201d Ms Small said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s so worth it to us, we just love the fireworks and the environment and we don\u2019t mind waiting for them.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll we need are camp chairs and a good amount of shade and we are set up for the day,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the best party in Brisbane, I tell everyone,\u201d Mr Coleman said. <\/p>\n<p>Police were expecting up to 450,000 people in the city celebrating the fireworks spectacle. <\/p>\n<p>Queensland Police Service Brisbane major events planning unit began planning this year\u2019s operation immediately after last year\u2019s event. <\/p>\n<p><a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.couriermail.com.au\/news\/queensland\/your-ultimate-guide-to-riverfire-2026\/news-story\/d403f0d2c32b4eac00869632f3a04691\" data-tgev=\"event119\" data-tgev-container=\"bodylink\" data-tgev-order=\"d403f0d2c32b4eac00869632f3a04691\" data-tgev-label=\"news\" data-tgev-metric=\"ev\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Riverfire 2026: Best spots to watch, fireworks times, transport<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Riverfire Operations Commander North Brisbane District Acting Chief Superintendent Simon Tayler said extra police would patrol and manage road closures throughout the event to ensure a smooth night. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur crews on the ground will be supported by water police patrolling the Brisbane River, and officers managing event logistics from our state police operations centre.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Acting Chief Superintendent Tayler said public safety is the police\u2019s top priority. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI encourage all attendees to be patient, considerate and respectful towards others,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Many early campers had taken trains and buses into the inner city to watch the show after a <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.couriermail.com.au\/news\/queensland\/ferry-strikes-on-table-for-all-of-brisbane-festival-and-beyond\/news-story\/a1c8b93f78f6525dea9367527164cdb9\" data-tgev=\"event119\" data-tgev-container=\"bodylink\" data-tgev-order=\"a1c8b93f78f6525dea9367527164cdb9\" data-tgev-label=\"news\" data-tgev-metric=\"ev\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">total shutdown of Brisbane\u2019s ferry system affected an estimated 30,000 people.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Those who chose the rideshare option faced an expensive journey. A trip from Bulimba to Southbank in an UberX was estimated to cost $40.56 at 4.30pm. On Thursday, the same trip was estimated to cost $25.02. <\/p>\n<p>Tom Webster drove in on his motorbike to watch the fireworks, and it took him an hour and a half to get from Wellington Point to New Farm. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was horrendous, the traffic was awful,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe lack of ferries and public transport has definitely been negative.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Chelsea Clarke and her partner had arrived at Southbank at 8am.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s my first year in Brisbane and I really wanted to celebrate and I thought I just had to get the best spot,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy partner was less excited because he\u2019s grown up here and he didn\u2019t want to wait around all day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are a tag team and have been taking turns getting up and walking around,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI probably won\u2019t do it again, but I think to be able to sit this close to the river is worth it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Over at Howard Smith Wharves, Bowen Terrace had been closed to traffic and was filled with a mixture of families, photographers and people relaxing waiting for the event to start.<\/p>\n<p>Photographers were lined up along the fencing with tripods, some having arrived as early as 7am to secure the best spots overlooking the Story Bridge.<\/p>\n<p>Symon Brushe was one of those and kept comfortable in his camping chair and a trolly full of drinks and snacks. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince 2012 I\u2019ve been coming to this spot,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou get better coverage of the bridge &#8211; I\u2019m pretty happy with the shots this year.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Clive Palmers\u2019 yacht could also be seen moored up just to the left of the bridge. <\/p>\n<p>Terry Moore arrived with his friends just before noon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy partner lives 500m away, it was quiet here, mainly photographers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s my second year doing it &#8211; I make a day of it, it\u2019s a social thing, you get to sit, relax, have a couple of drinks and chill with your friends.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Inspector Peta Comadira said eventgoers need to play their part while extra police keep them safe. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cExpect plenty of people, so plan your travels ahead and follow the directions of police and event staff,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re having a few drinks, know your limits, and remember don\u2019t drink and drive. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook out for your mates.
