{"id":89067,"date":"2026-09-06T02:03:15","date_gmt":"2026-09-06T02:03:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/89067\/"},"modified":"2026-09-06T02:03:15","modified_gmt":"2026-09-06T02:03:15","slug":"young-kelpies-and-collies-get-the-limelight-but-these-farmers-prize-their-old-working-dogs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/89067\/","title":{"rendered":"Young kelpies and collies get the limelight, but these farmers prize their old working dogs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Kingsley Vaux&#8217;s family has been farming at Ongerup, about 400 kilometres south-east of Perth, for more than a century.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">By their side are about eight generations of working dogs, with 15-year-old Cassie the last in the line.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They&#8217;re normally gone at 10 or 12, but she still seems reasonably healthy although she&#8217;s gone deaf so we&#8217;re down to signals,&#8221; Mr Vaux said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s a bit of a fight to get her to change direction or anything, but she&#8217;s teaching the young ones a little bit too, so it&#8217;s still a joy to be working with her.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A seasoned professional<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The border collie-huntaway cross may be deaf and arthritic, but her love for sheep work remains strong.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;[She] always wants to do work even though she&#8217;s hardly capable of it these days, at 15,&#8221; Mr Vaux said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;All these jobs she&#8217;s done before and she knows where they&#8217;re going.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She is one of many old farm dogs who, far from being put out to pasture, remain &#8220;totally faithful&#8221; to their masters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;You can see it in their eyes,&#8221; Mr Vaux said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s just devotion, isn&#8217;t it?&#8221;Manners maketh dog<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Thirteen-year-old Bundy &#8220;loves getting out and amongst it&#8221;, according to owner Renae Parsons, who relies on working dogs to muster thousands of sheep at her farm in Tenterden, about 330km south-east of Perth.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A kelpie puppy on the beach.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/bbd5d1eb3cbaf7d6d39e7a849a72de9f.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Bundy as a puppy. (ABC Great Southern: Mark Bennett)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But as much as Bundy likes work, there is one thing he won&#8217;t stand for.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;He doesn&#8217;t like to be yelled at,&#8221; Ms Parsons said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;You can talk firmly, but as soon as you get grumpy, he will go and sit on the ute and won&#8217;t work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;So you have to calm down and then he&#8217;ll come back and start working again.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Better bond, better working dog<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Jenny Parsons, who trains and breeds dogs on her Tenterden farm, says this level of care is typical of farming folk, despite their tough reputation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;A lot of people think that farmers are rough and heartless, but when you look around at all the old dogs that they&#8217;ve still got and absolutely adore \u2026 you can tell that most farmers are very, very soft underneath,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Woman sitting embraces young working dog while holding leash.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/ae8c139ca07a2a14c5c4007b47d358af.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Jenny Parsons with her young dog Sherlock says the bond between a dog and trainer is crucial.\u00a0 (ABC Great Southern: Mark Bennett)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In fact, it&#8217;s this bond that makes for a great working dog.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They have to want to work for you,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The better the bond \u2026 the bigger the try.&#8221;Special bond<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Vaux is emotional walking through the graveyard on his property where each dog has an epithet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Beth was a talker, Fudge a prankster, Quarter always knew her left from right, and Speckles loved the water.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s bloody hard when you leave one, when one leaves you,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They tug at the heartstrings, even now.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He knows Cassie will end up there one day soon, but for now he&#8217;s grateful for his &#8220;loyal friend&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;She&#8217;s a good mate, a good friend, and a good worker,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s bloody amazing when you can hardly just move a finger and they know what you want to do.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A border collie sits on a ute tray.
