{"id":89273,"date":"2026-09-06T11:16:58","date_gmt":"2026-09-06T11:16:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/89273\/"},"modified":"2026-09-06T11:16:58","modified_gmt":"2026-09-06T11:16:58","slug":"volunteers-and-workers-recognised-for-bravery-at-wa-fire-and-emergency-services-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/89273\/","title":{"rendered":"Volunteers and workers recognised for bravery at WA Fire and Emergency Services Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Some of WA\u2019s most courageous heroes have been recognised for their service at the 2026 WA Fire and Emergency Services Awards in Perth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">The event saw 17 awards handed out across individual and team categories, including the inaugural WA Fire and Emergency Service Young Person of the Year Award.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Winners came from across the State, from Esperance on the south coast to Dampier in the Pilbara region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Marine Rescue Esperance volunteer David Macmahon was one of the award winners, receiving the Marine Rescue Individual Achievement Award for his heroism in saving a man who had been swept into sea at the notorious rocks of Salmon Beach in Esperance in January.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Mr Macmahon jumped in after a tourist fell into the water, a fate no one had survived before, reaching the man within 20 minutes and staying with him on his board until help arrived on a boat, taking the pair to safety.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Mr Macmahon said he jumped at the chance to save a life in the historically deadly spot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cWe\u2019ve never done a rescue there, they\u2019ve always been recoveries, they\u2019ve been washed off the rocks and drowned, and we\u2019re unfortunately searching for a body,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cThis one we had a chance to get, I said \u2018I\u2019ll meet you there, you grab a board, I\u2019ll grab a wetsuit, I\u2019ll see you there\u2019, and I basically jumped in the swell, jumped in the ocean, and paddled out, he was still alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">He said he wanted to use the award as an opportunity to raise awareness of the dangers of the ocean-adjacent rocks across the south coast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cThere\u2019s no awareness of how dangerous it is, a lot of it is the black rocks, but a lot of it is unpredictable swells, swells from different angles, different places,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cThis particular spot is a beautiful spot to go and look at and unfortunately Instagram and fishermen think it\u2019s a good spot, you actually catch more fish off the beach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cIt was a year and three days before we had to recover a body from there at exactly the same spot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/adcb5ce9e4cd3ac1da658e3f9981eeca89f511fb.jpg\" alt=\"Jurien Bay volunteer firefighter Danielle Ryder was awarded the WAFES Young Person of the Year Award.\" class=\"css-16r7l45-StyledImage en5ut4d0\"\/>Camera IconJurien Bay volunteer firefighter Danielle Ryder was awarded the WAFES Young Person of the Year Award. Credit: Oliver Lane<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Also recognised on the night was Jurien Bay volunteer firefighter Danielle Ryder, who was given the inaugural WAFES Young Person of the Year Award for her work designing and coordinating training for cadets to advance to adult brigades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Ms Ryder said her program had seen 19 cadets make the step up, which helps address a shortage in the Wheatbelt town.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cBeing in a regional town, there\u2019s a big drop off especially for our children who want to go on to university and need to move back down to the city,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cSo keeping them in town, and we have a big gap from like our 18-year-olds up to like the 45-year-olds, I\u2019d say, just providing them something that they have meaning in so that they want to stay around.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1ix6vwn-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cIt\u2019s proved to work quite well so far.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Some of WA\u2019s most courageous heroes have been recognised for their service at the 2026 WA Fire and&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":89274,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[7],"tags":[1792,152,335,464],"class_list":["post-89273","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-perth","tag-disaster-and-emergency","tag-news","tag-perth","tag-wa-news"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/89273","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=89273"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/89273\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/89274"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=89273"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=89273"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=89273"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
