A member of the Adelaide cheer squad went viral for all the wrong reasons on Saturday night after being spotted in \u2018blackface\u2019. Now the woman behind the paint has defended her actions.<\/p>\n

During the Crows\u2019 elimination final win over the Western Bulldogs, a fan with a black-painted face behind the goals was seen on the broadcast and on the big screens at the Adelaide Oval.<\/p>\n

Fans were quick to call it out online, with one video of the fan seen more than 190,000 times alone, while others were viewed tens of thousands of times.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s 2026, and there are people who still think this is okay\u2026. Hey @Adelaide_FCyou okay with one of your members in \u201cblackface?\u201d one X user wrote along with a picture of the fan.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat the f***,\u201d another post showing footage of the fan said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought I was seeing things, but nope, there it is. There\u2019s a dude in blackface at the footy. In 2026. You\u2019d expect it in 1926 perhaps. Why? Just, why?,\u201d a third wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy are we showing the guy in blackface on the screen?,\u201d another said.<\/p>\n

However, the woman at the centre of the furore has broken her silence, stating she simply dresses to look like the club mascot, Claude the Crow.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just thought it would be more realistic (to paint black on her skin), that\u2019s why I\u2019ve got black gloves as well,\u201d she told The Advertiser <\/a>after the backlash.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo I\u2019m dressed like the mascot Claude the crow.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of people have thought the costume was cool and have asked to get photos with me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Others have come to her defence following the uproar.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a stupid costume, but it is not \u2018blackface\u2019. She is pretending to be a bird not pretending she is black. Blackface is offensive for very specific reasons. \u201cI want to be a Crow\u201d isn\u2019t one of them,\u201d Mark Gottlieb wrote on X.<\/p>\n

\u201cOld mate dressing as a crow clearly didn\u2019t do it with the intention of being offensive but that doesn\u2019t take away the fact we are all old and aware enough to know that blackface in any form is unacceptable,\u201d another said.<\/p>\n
