We’ve been there for many years and done different types of scripted programming out of there.

“So to be able to do a live event in Melbourne is incredible and allows us to tap into the culture of sports fandom in Australia.”

The NFL will launch the opening week of its season with a game between Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday morning.

The match will begin at 10.30am (AEST), ensuring prime-time viewing in the US where it is expected to command an audience of more than 20m viewers.

There will be separate streams for the global audience and the Australian audience, allowing advertisers including Domino’s, Visit Victoria and Vocus (owner of Dodo) to target the local market.

Mr Spitzer said while Netflix has no immediate plans to bid for the rights to dedicated sports broadcasts, its streaming of the Melbourne NFL match is part of its “events strategy”.

“We are an entertainment platform first and foremost,” Mr Spitzer said.

“Our goal really is to entertain the world, and we’ve progressed over the past few years with ‘live functionality’, through live concerts and live sports.

“It’s a natural extension of what we do as a service. But really, for Netflix, it’s an event strategy as much as it is a sport strategy on the live side.

“We’re not – at least right now – in the volume business for sports. But we’re always open to conversations for the right sports in individual countries.

“It is just finding that balance as we continue to grow and evolve.”

Next year, Netflix will stream every match of the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, with the company reportedly paying $US200m ($277m) for the rights.

Netflix has also won the rights to the 2031 tournament.

The World Cup deal follows investment in one-off boxing matches, WWE, Major League Baseball, and up to five NFL matches per season.

“With each one of those, we want to make sure it feels like it can create that global ‘water cooler conversation’,” Mr Spitzer said.

“Having the NFL season kick off outside of the US, that feels like a big event to us and it’s something that we feel like we can put a lot of marketing muscle behind. So we definitely see the value in it.”

Netflix is the dominant streaming platform in Australia with 6.4m subscribers, and has an estimated 325m subscribers across 190 countries worldwide.

In 2025, Netflix posted $1.47 billion revenue in Australia, most of which was disbursed internationally, meaning the company paid minimal income tax in this country.

Such accounting practices, which have also been used by tech giants including Google and Meta, have been the subject of fierce political debate in Australia in recent years.

James Madden has worked for The Australian for over 20 years.
