Melbourne wants to trade-out premiership midfielder and favourite son Jack Viney <\/a>in the firm belief he won\u2019t fit in the midfield unit next season.<\/p>\n

The Demons have strongly encouraged the veteran clearance-winner to explore a move to a new home for 2027 after battling serious injuries this year.<\/p>\n

Club bosses told Viney, 32, senior opportunities would be limited for him next season if he remained at Melbourne.<\/a><\/p>\n

It is a ruthless call from coach Steven King and list boss Tim Lamb on one of the club\u2019s 2021 premiership warriors after 14 years in red and blue.<\/p>\n

But the club wanted to be transparent with the hard nut about the challenge he faced next year breaking into the best 23.<\/p>\n

Melbourne is happy to retain Viney for next season if there are no takers but King, in particular, stressed to the onballer he wanted to be honest about Viney\u2019s senior prospects moving forward.<\/p>\n

Viney, who has turned down rival advances in recent years including Geelong in 2020 and North Melbourne in 2024, is understood to be disappointed by the decision and will weigh up his next steps.<\/p>\n

Essendon is one club which could make a move to beef up their midfield and leadership stocks but they are yet to declare any interest in Viney.<\/p>\n

It will be a blow to the Demons off the field as Viney, who was co-captain between 2017-2019, is a highly-respected and popular member of the team.<\/p>\n

But the emergence of the Demons\u2019 young gun ballwinners and the arrival of former Saint Jack Steele has meant Viney is now surplus to requirements in the engine room.<\/p>\n

Viney is contracted for two more seasons after signing a bumper extension in 2024 until the end of 2028.<\/p>\n

The deal was believed to have been worth more than $700,000 a year amid strong interest from the Kangaroos where Jack\u2019s father, Todd, was football manager.<\/p>\n

A trade would free up significant salary cap space as Melbourne circle Hawthorn forward Calsher Dear and North Melbourne fringe forward Zane Duursma.<\/p>\n

However, the move may come at a cost for the Demons, if he is successful at the trade table. <\/p>\n

The Demons could have to pay some of Viney\u2019s salary if he moves to a new club for the remaining two years of his deal. The trade would be for a late draft pick. <\/p>\n

The Demons have two first-round picks in this year\u2019s draft to trade for top-line talent after securing Gold Coast\u2019s first selection in the Christian Petracca trade.<\/p>\n

Viney has been a heart-and-soul midfielder for Melbourne across 238 matches, winning two best-and-fairests in 2016 and 2024.<\/p>\n

He suffered achilles, back and toe injuries this year before playing his only senior game for the season in the elimination final loss to Carlton at the MCG. <\/p>\n

Viney gathered 13 possessions and two clearances in the loss. <\/p>\n

He finished 10th in the club\u2019s best and fairest in 2025 after averaging 22 disposals and four clearances across 18 games. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Melbourne wants to
