A Noosa man who managed to be pulled over by police twice in the span of 10 minutes for speeding is set to lose his licence for six months and will have to cough up thousands of dollars in fines.<\/p>\n

According to a press release published today by the Queensland Police Service, State Highway Patrol officers intercepted the HSV Maloo at 4:15pm on August 5 on the Bruce Highway near Coles Creek, after observing him overtaking their unmarked Toyota RAV4 police car at 155km\/h in a 100km\/h zone.<\/p>\n

The 23-year-old driver was fined for exceeding the speed limit by over 40km\/h, which carries a penalty of eight demerit points and a $1986 fine. He’ll also have his driver’s licence suspended for six months.<\/p>\n

Not only that, but State Highway Patrol officers also observed he had an illegally altered licence plate, and gave him a further $345 fine.<\/p>\n

Less than 10 minutes later, he was pulled over by Gympie Highway Patrol officers in an unmarked Kia Stinger on the Old Bruce Highway near Traveston, after they had detected him travelling 90km\/h in a 60km\/h zone.<\/p>\n

Footage shared by the QPS shows the driver telling the officer he had just lost his licence on the highway, with the officer replying in surprise: “You’re joking. You’re kidding”.<\/p>\n

Drivers are permitted to continue driving after receiving a traffic infringement notice for exceeding the speed limit by over 40km\/h, with the licence suspension applying from the date on the Notice of Driver Licence Suspension for Speeding Offence sent via post.<\/p>\n

The Gympie Highway Patrol officer gave the Noosa man a further $777 speeding fine and four demerit points.<\/p>\n

All up, the man received $3108 in fines and a six-month licence suspension in the space of around 10 minutes. While the two speeding offences carry an additional penalty of 12 demerit points when added together, in Queensland double demerit points are applied for second or subsequent offences committed within one year of the previous offence.<\/p>\n

This includes exceeding the speed limit by more than 20km\/h. Given the second offence in this case was well within 12 months \u2013 and quite possibly well within 12 minutes \u2013 the Noosa man will likely receive eight demerit points for the second offence, bringing the grand total for his unlucky afternoon drive to 16 demerit points.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is always disappointing to see a driver travelling at such high speeds. However, to be intercepted again for speeding just minutes after the first intercept shows a complete disregard for the law, the driver\u2019s own safety, and the safety of other road users,\u201d said Paul Kelly, Acting Inspector, Specialist Operations.<\/p>\n
