Three were scrapped and one was placed in storage for heritage reasons.<\/p>\n<p>Transport for NSW officials flew to Germany twice in 2024 to inspect the two replacement maintenance units at the factory where they were built in Bavaria by a division of Germany\u2019s Alimak Group.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The Sydney Harbour Bridge\u2019s centenary is in less than six years.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/1788775611_825_65e26b7b5159a56a78ca068a49b0ca233b24475b.jpeg\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 ldCIuB\"\/>The Sydney Harbour Bridge\u2019s centenary is in less than six years.Dominic Lorrimer<\/p>\n<p>One of the justifications for the trips paid for by the manufacturer was to \u201censure it can be installed on the Sydney Harbour Bridge in a safe and efficient manner\u201d, according to post-travel reports by the agency.<\/p>\n<p>The trips also \u201cenabled staff to witness and document trial installations\u201d of the units at the factory, which \u201creplicated conditions on the Sydney Harbour Bridge\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Despite this, their installation on the world\u2019s tallest steel arch bridge, which will require its temporary closure, remains in limbo.<\/p>\n<p>Greens transport spokesperson Cate Faehrmann said the saga had all the hallmarks of an expensive bureaucratic stuff-up that demanded answers from the roads minister.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow is it that transport officials travelled overseas on multiple occasions to observe testing including trial installation exercises and reported back that everything was fine, only to identify issues when they\u2019ve been delivered?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The maintenance units are meant to travel up and down the bridge\u2019s arches on tracks.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/1788775612_194_d3a2d92d75a5781c0613fb9fabcb82af0457e9e1.jpeg\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 ldCIuB\"\/>The maintenance units are meant to travel up and down the bridge\u2019s arches on tracks.Transport for NSW<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis smacks of incompetence and someone has to be held accountable. It is designed to provide access to crews; lifting capability; and a working platform on the bridge.
