{"id":9020,"date":"2026-05-11T06:37:13","date_gmt":"2026-05-11T06:37:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/9020\/"},"modified":"2026-05-11T06:37:13","modified_gmt":"2026-05-11T06:37:13","slug":"maree-mavis-crabtree-found-not-guilty-of-murdering-son-jonathan-with-spiked-fruit-smoothie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/9020\/","title":{"rendered":"Maree Mavis Crabtree found not guilty of murdering son Jonathan with spiked fruit smoothie"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A Gold Coast woman accused of fatally drugging her son with a smoothie laced with prescription medication has been cleared of his murder.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Maree Mavis Crabtree faced a trial in the Supreme Court in Brisbane, charged over the death of Jonathan Crabtree at their Maudsland home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She pleaded not guilty to his murder, an earlier attempted murder and fraud.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">After hearing evidence from more than 60 witnesses across five weeks, a jury retired to deliberate on Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">On Monday, they returned a not guilty verdict on all three charges. (AAP: Jason O&#8217;Brien)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">During the trial, the jury heard the 26-year-old was found dead on his bed by paramedics in July 2017 from an apparent overdose.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Prosecutors had alleged on two occasions, including the night before he was discovered, the 59-year-old blended and served her son the fruit drink, which she had spiked with prescription drugs including toxic levels of liquid Oxycodone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">After his death, it was alleged Ms Crabtree then fraudulently made an insurance claim through his superannuation fund.<\/p>\n<p>Was it a &#8216;deal with the devil&#8217;?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Central to the prosecution&#8217;s case was key witness Tara Crabtree, the sister of Mr Crabtree and daughter of Ms Crabtree.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She had alleged in her testimony, that she was present with her mother on both occasions when she made her son the drinks.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Headshot of Jonathan Crabtree with a friend who has been pixellated.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/8435c99e1941cf99f88f650cf1673741.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Jonathan Crabtree died from a fatal dose of prescription medication in July 2017. (ABC News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">At one point in his arguments, Mr Edwards put it to the jury Tara Crabtree may have &#8220;walked away untouched&#8221; from causing her brother&#8217;s death, and taken all his money and their previously part-owned home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Have the prosecution made a deal with the devil?&#8221; he put to the jury.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">However, in her closing argument, Crown prosecutor Caroline Marco told the jury Tara Crabtree&#8217;s evidence was &#8220;honest and reliable&#8221; and should not be overlooked for getting &#8220;inconsequential&#8221; information incorrect.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Her failure to remember the little details doesn&#8217;t make her a liar\u2026 it confirms the authenticity of her account,&#8221;  she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;There is a lot of other evidence\u2026 that circumstantially tends to prove the guilt of the defendant.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Marco told the jury there was evidence she had &#8220;a clear financial motive&#8221; to kill Mr Crabtree.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The defendant found herself in the position where she could do no longer tolerate living with her son,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman with sunglasses and wearing a pink and white shirt.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/dc453a174e8dc584123d5e52a0d64646.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Maree Mavis Crabtree is seen attending her murder trial at the Supreme Court in Brisbane, Wednesday, April 8, 2026.
