(Supplied: Peabody\u00a0)<\/p>\n<p>Union backs expansion<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mining and Energy Union district secretary Andy Davey said the union supported the extension &#8220;100 per cent&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;This would be huge, not only for the workers, but the community,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Helensburgh is the oldest continuous mine being worked. (Supplied: Peabody)<\/p>\n<p>Peabody explains new design<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Peabody said the proposed expansion would be west of existing operations and away from Woronora Reservoir.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Its scoping report confirms the project would remain within the Woronora Special Area, which forms part of Sydney&#8217;s drinking water catchment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The company proposes using 163-metre-wide extraction panels separated by 55-metre pillars to reduce subsidence effects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A Peabody spokesperson said Metropolitan had consistently complied with consent conditions requiring &#8220;negligible impacts&#8221; to upland swamps and water quality and quantity since its current project approval was granted in 2009.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The spokesperson cited a 2018 NSW expert panel finding &#8220;no evidence&#8221; of fractures connecting the underground workings to the surface.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Metropolitan will keep operating its proven, conservative mining design in order to comply with its consent conditions,&#8221; the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Peabody said the proposed continuation area would add about 1,300 hectares, compared with 6,200 hectares covered by its existing mining leases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The company also proposes a methane-abatement plant, which it said would begin operating in 2032.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Separately, Peabody is also seeking approval to extend Longwall 317 and add Longwall 318 which remains under assessment and has received critical advice from the federal Independent Expert Scientific Committee (IESC).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It found Peabody&#8217;s modelling did not provide an adequate or defensible basis for predicting impacts on protected upland swamps, groundwater-dependent ecosystems and waterways flowing into Woronora Reservoir.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The IESC cannot envisage any feasible mitigation measures, including offsets, that could safeguard these irreplaceable water resources and water-dependent [matters of national environmental significance],&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"About four underground coal miners underground\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/72ba9da6ccf100ff8126654e23f61a55.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Metropolitan Mine has operated at Helensburgh since 1888. (Supplied: Peabody)<\/p>\n<p>Greens raise catchment concerns<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">NSW Greens Environment spokesperson Sue Higginson said mining had already damaged parts of the Woronora catchment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s a legacy mine situated where no mine should be,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s past time to shut it down, not extend its life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Wollongong Greens councillor Deidre Stuart described the scale of the new project as &#8220;massive&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Last year, she unsuccessfully moved for Wollongong City Council to oppose the Longwalls 317 and 318 modification and request an Independent Planning Commission determination.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Cr Stuart said the smaller proposal had indicated Peabody intended to pursue a larger western expansion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I just feel a bit sickened and disgusted, to be honest,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s no job of any kind, let alone a coalmining job, that&#8217;s worth having if you haven&#8217;t got water to drink and to live with.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I want to see our water catchment protected because that supplies the water and it holds the water.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Open coal field with pipes and bulldozer operating in back ground.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/27b09d22c1cebb7f245b80a1ed4b1c21.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The Metropolitan Mine at Helensburgh has been operating for about 138 years.
