{"id":9045,"date":"2026-05-11T07:06:25","date_gmt":"2026-05-11T07:06:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/9045\/"},"modified":"2026-05-11T07:06:25","modified_gmt":"2026-05-11T07:06:25","slug":"canberra-to-sydney-rail-link-gets-100-million-upgrade-to-improve-train-speeds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/9045\/","title":{"rendered":"Canberra to Sydney rail link gets $100 million upgrade to improve train speeds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Canberra to Sydney rail link is set for a $100 million upgrade, in a bid to reduce the passenger train trip time to under four hours.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">There have <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2023-03-10\/british-rail-expert-back-push-upgrade-canberra-sydney-train-line\/102076296\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/102076296\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">long been calls to upgrade the 321-kilometre corridor<\/a> \u2014 on a bad day, it can take 4.5 hours to get between the two cities, making it considerably slower than travelling by car, bus, or plane.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Tomorrow&#8217;s federal budget will include $50 million for &#8220;priority upgrades&#8221; to the rail link, with the funding matched by $25 million from the ACT government, and $25 million from the New South Wales government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr said commuters would see &#8220;progressive and incremental improvements&#8221; for a more efficient trip<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Initial upgrades will include some some &#8220;quick fixes&#8221; designed to make the service &#8220;more efficient&#8221;, like new boomgates and lights at level crossings; improvements to track alignments and turnouts; and station and stabling improvements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;A lot of people want the option around a train, and I know the issue really has been \u2014 it&#8217;s an older service,&#8221; NSW Regional Transport Minister Jenny Aitchison said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;At the moment if you&#8217;re travelling from Sydney to Canberra for example, it&#8217;s about four and a quarter hours, it can be as long as four and a half.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are hoping to get that down to under four hours.
