{"id":90597,"date":"2026-09-08T02:11:07","date_gmt":"2026-09-08T02:11:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/90597\/"},"modified":"2026-09-08T02:11:07","modified_gmt":"2026-09-08T02:11:07","slug":"singaporean-pleads-guilty-to-manslaughter-in-perth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/90597\/","title":{"rendered":"Singaporean pleads guilty to manslaughter in Perth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Claudia Tan<br \/>The Straits Times<br \/>Sept 7, 2026<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">A Singaporean held in custody in Australia since 2024 over allegations that he intentionally <a class=\"text-primary-brand no-underline hover:underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stomp.sg\/singapore-seen\/sporean-driver-charged-with-murder-in-perth-after-allegedly-hitting-cyclist-and?ref=inline-article-9642034\" target=\"_blank\" data-discover=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ran down a cyclist with a car while on holiday in Perth<\/a> has pleaded guilty to manslaughter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Ng Jing Kai, who was initially charged with murder, will be sentenced on Nov 3.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Documents seen by <a class=\"text-primary-brand no-underline hover:underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/courts-crime\/singaporean-driver-who-ran-over-cyclist-in-perth-pleads-guilty-to-manslaughter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Straits Times<\/a> showed that the 29-year-old pleaded guilty to the reduced charge in August in the Supreme Court of Western Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Ng, who was first charged in a lower court, has been held in custody since his arrest in May 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Scroll to continue reading<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Media reports then showed that he was later an inmate at the Hakea Prison \u2013 a maximum security facility in Canning Vale, Western Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Ng, a former mathematics tutor, was driving a grey Kia Carnival in Carlisle, a suburb in <a class=\"text-primary-brand no-underline hover:underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stomp.sg\/singapore-seen\/booking-confirmed-and-paid-agoda-spore-tourist-arrives-perth-find-no-accommodation?ref=inline-article-9642034\" target=\"_blank\" data-discover=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Perth<\/a>, when the incident happened around 1.45pm on May 24, 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">He had been on holiday with his family and friends.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">The Western Australia Police Force (WAPF), in a previous interview with ST, said Ng hit the cyclist with his car, \u201ccausing him to be dragged by the vehicle for a short distance, sustaining critical injuries\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">The cyclist was taken to Royal Perth Hospital, where he died.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Police investigated the case as a possible property dispute. Ng was also accused of acting as a vigilante.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">According to reports in Australia, Ng had accused the deceased of taking items from the car and refusing to return them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">The Singaporean then chased down the 48-year-old cyclist and ran over him, before dragging his injured body for over 30m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Detective Inspector Gorton from the WAPF told ST then that several members of his family and friends were in the car with Ng at the time of the incident.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-primary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">The maximum penalty for manslaughter in Perth is life imprisonment.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/stomp-comment-COLiWNMD.png\" alt=\"Stomp Comment\" class=\"absolute -mt-lg -ml-xs w-[203px] md:w-[255px]\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Have something to say?
