Photos from the trial of killer grazier Darryl Valroy Young paint a picture of his failed attempt to create an alibi after gunning down four neighbours, killing three.<\/p>\n

Young received a sentence of life imprisonment with a non-parole period of 40 years<\/a> on Monday after he was found guilty<\/a> of three murders and an attempted murder.<\/p>\n

Young also shot Ross Tighe who fled the scene with a gunshot wound.<\/p>\n

The now-36-year-old survivor still has the deformed bullet in his hip.<\/p>\n

Young drove his dark grey Nissan Navara ute to and from the triple murder.<\/p>\n

In the back seat police found an open rifle case and an orange work shirt like the one that Ross Tighe described Young wearing during the killings.<\/p>\n

On the driver’s seat there was an open bottle of hand sanitiser, which prosecutors said Young used after the shootings while rushing to create an alibi.<\/p>\n

Photos that were taken of Young after he shot his neighbours have been released by the court.<\/p>\n

In his scramble for an alibi, Young caught up with wind farm workers on his property<\/a> who later sent photos to police.<\/p>\n

He traversed 7 kilometres of arid terrain on unsealed roads at his isolated Bogie cattle station \u2014 a two-hour drive from the nearest major town of Collinsville.<\/p>\n

When he was not working in the mines, Young lived at a dilapidated farmhouse torn apart by Tropical Cyclone Debbie in 2017 with his stepmother Sharon Young and son Derek Young.<\/p>\n

Inside Young’s bedroom were open packets of .30-30-calibre rifle cartridges<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Prosecutors told the trial that a .30-30-calibre rifle was used in the killing.<\/p>\n

Young was not registered to carry a .30-30 calibre rifle, nor was his son.<\/p>\n

Two cleaning kits for a .30-30 calibre rifle were found in a truck on Young’s property.<\/p>\n

Prosecutors said the rifle was never recovered but said Young likely disposed of it in one of the many old gold mine shafts on his property.<\/p>\n

In the kitchen, in a box of long-life milk cartons, police found an aging rifle cartridge casing.<\/p>\n

The trial heard the Queensland Police forensics unit used a microscope to confirm the impressions on that rifle cartridge casing matched those on the casings found at the murder scene.<\/p>\n

Strewn across a table in the kitchen were SD cards that Young said he used for motion detection cameras stationed about his property.<\/p>\n

Two of those cameras were found in the kitchen.<\/p>\n

Young told the court that he removed cameras usually at the gate of his property the day before the shooting.<\/p>\n

He said they had been “playing up”, but prosecutors and the judge said Young did not want the meeting with his neighbours captured.<\/p>\n

Young and his stepmother drove an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) to meet with wind farm workers who had been on the station since before the shooting.<\/p>\n

Young argued he had an alibi and could not have been at the scene of the shooting and was with the wind farm workers, about 7 kilometres away, at the given times.<\/p>\n

The wind farm workers, Liam Parnell and Matthew Garbutt, were connected with a police negotiator hours after the shooting.<\/p>\n

They asked the men for photos of Young and his relatives with their hands up \u2014 which demonstrated that no-one was armed.<\/p>\n

Young is to serve three life sentences for the murders and 16 years for attempted murder.<\/p>\n

The 63-year-old, who has been in custody since 2022, was given a 40-year non-parole period.<\/p>\n
