A boxing coach with bikie links and a history of dealings with police has been gunned down in Sydney\u2019s south-west.<\/p>\n

Louis Meehan, 32, was killed in the carpark of Punchbowl Community Centre just before 6pm on Wednesday as members of the public looked on in horror, according to The Daily Telegraph<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Emergency services rushed to the scene and desperately tried to save Meehan, the son of professional boxer Kali Meehan, but he died at the scene.<\/p>\n

NSW Police said a vehicle was seen fleeing the scene immediately after the shooting, with investigators expected to examine a silver Lexus sedan as a key line of inquiry.<\/p>\n

The shooting comes as Sydney reels from two suspected mistaken-identity killings last week<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Addressing reporters on Thursday, Acting Assistant Commissioner Grant Taylor said the man killed at Punchbowl was known to police and had links to bikie gangs.<\/p>\n

However, he said the shooting does not have the “same hallmarks” as other incidents that have occurred over the last several months and police do not believe the attack is linked to rivalling organised crime networks.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“This shooting appears to be one individual person acting alone at this stage,” he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“We don’t believe, in the infancy of the investigation, that it does relate to the ongoing feud between the two organised crime networks.<\/p>\n

“The person who was killed last night is known to us. He is known to the Queensland Police Service.<\/p>\n

“There are links to outlaw motorcycle gangs and it’s not impossible that is why he was killed.”<\/p>\n

Assistant Commissioner Taylor said there were no known threats to the man’s safety leading up to the shooting.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“It wasn’t on the radar for us prior to this incident, as I said, but he is known to us and we are now exploring obviously his background, why he was there, why he’s in Sydney,” he said.<\/p>\n

“He’s a frequent traveller to Queensland and has a lot of interaction with the Queensland Police and the community up there.”<\/p>\n

Last Wednesday,\u00a040-year-old Joshua MacDonald was gunned down<\/a>\u00a0at the doorway of a home where children were present on Bruce Street in Merrylands West.<\/p>\n

Mr MacDonald had just parked a work vehicle in the driveway when shots were fired from a stolen grey Audi sedan.<\/p>\n

Just one day earlier, university student Marco Tapia, 23,\u00a0was fatally shot while in his bedroom at his family home in Glen Alpine<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The New South Wales government this week unveiled a legislative package<\/a> including an aggravated offence for conspiracy to commit gang-related murder, increasing the maximum penalty to life imprisonment.<\/p>\n

The new offences will capture criminals involved in planning a murder, even if they are not the person conducting the killing.<\/p>\n

They will cover those who attempt, conspire or agree to murder \u2013 as well as anyone who solicits, encourages, persuades or endeavours to persuade someone to murder \u2013 even if the murder does not actually occur.<\/p>\n

NSW Premier Chris Minns said authorities wanted to hit organised crime gangs at “every point”.<\/p>\n

“We want to hit these criminal networks at every point \u2013 the people who organise the violence, the people who facilitate it online and the people who ultimately carry it out,” he said.<\/p>\n

“If you conspire to arrange a gangland murder, you should face the prospect of spending the rest of your life behind bars.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A boxing coach with bikie
