(Supplied: Tasmanian government)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Kanofski said monthly berthing costs ranged from $600,000 in Scotland to $900,000 at Geelong, but he did not provide the committee with the total cost incurred.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He said both ships were on track to begin carrying passengers and freight across Bass Strait from the end of October.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The two existing ships, which have a book value of about $50 million each, have been listed for sale.<\/p>\n<p>TT-Line&#8217;s growing debt<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">TT-Line&#8217;s finances have been the subject of ongoing scrutiny after the state&#8217;s auditor-general last year formed the view the government-owned company had become insolvent in July.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In last year&#8217;s state budget, the company was given a $75 million equity injection and had its debt capacity increased from $990 million to $1.4 billion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The company disputes that it was ever insolvent.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A large red and white ferry with SPIRIT OF TASMANIA on it sailing through a bay.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1da5d6b36bf67f714b9188b62cfbb2d8.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The delivery of the new ships has been hampered by delays and cost blowouts. (Supplied: David Wallace)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">At Tuesday&#8217;s hearing, Mr Kanofski was asked by Labor&#8217;s Treasury spokesman Dean Winter to describe the company&#8217;s financial position.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I would describe the current financial position as very challenging,&#8221;  Mr Kanofski replied.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Obviously, we&#8217;ve inherited a position where because of delays in the berthing project in particular, we&#8217;re in a situation where we&#8217;re running four vessels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;And \u2026 it&#8217;s a lot in terms of the cost of running four vessels when only two of them are revenue-generating.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Kanofski noted the company was carrying a &#8220;substantial&#8221; amount of debt and that its interest repayments were &#8220;quite high&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ll stress that at all times, TT-Line has been able to pay its debts as and when they fall due,&#8221;  he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;That has always been the case, and it remains the case today.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Sleek but partially unfinished interiors in the Spirit of Tasmania IV, including new bars and a cinema room.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/025177810692063e2508f16cbf3f1e93.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The new ships are expected to start operating in October.
