A man has died and many others were trapped after a massive nine-car pileup in Western Sydney on Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n
Emergency services were called to Canterbury Rd in Lakemba about 11.40am Tuesday after reports two vehicles had crashed. <\/p>\n
When police arrived, they found two cars had collided from nose-to-tail, trapping the drivers inside. <\/p>\n
The sedan continued travelling a few meters before colliding head-on with a Ute, trapping all occupants.<\/p>\n
Seven other vehicles then collided a short distance away, with multiple people trapped inside the cars.<\/p>\n
The driver of the sedan \u2013 a man believed to be in his 80s \u2013 died at the scene and is yet to be formally identified.<\/p>\n
A passenger of the sedan \u2013 a 78-year-old woman \u2013 was freed from the vehicle by Fire and Rescue NSW and was taken to St George Hospital, where she remains in a critical condition.<\/p>\n
Nine other drivers were freed from the vehicles by paramedics, and have been transported to hospital for mandatory testing. <\/p>\n
The massive pileup caused traffic chaos for Lakemba on Tuesday, with Canterbury Rd between Chapel St and Haldon St closed in both directions. <\/p>\n
Emergency services, a tow truck and Transport NSW are on the scene as police divert traffic. <\/p>\n
\u201cPolice are directing traffic on site,\u201d a LiveTraffic NSW statement read. <\/p>\n
\u201cOngoing police investigations are expected to take some time.<\/p>\n
\u201cAvoid the area, use an alternative route.\u201d<\/p>\n
Light vehicles can use local diversions, while heavy vehicles have been told to consider using Bexley Rd, the M5 Motorway and King Georges Rd. <\/p>\n
