A Year 7 student is reportedly \u201cfighting for his life\u201d after his backpack became trapped between two train carriages and he was dragged several metres by the fast-moving transport in Melbourne.<\/p>\n
Emergency services rushed the boy, who attends St Aloysius College, to North Melbourne Station about 3.50pm on Monday.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s understood the boy was hit by the train, dragged several metres and then trapped underneath it for up to an hour as a crowd of commuters looked on.<\/p>\n
It was reported the boy was trying to retrieve his mobile phone.<\/p>\n
The horrifying incident was witnessed by commuters as well as fellow students from his school.<\/p>\n
Fire Rescue Victoria received multiple triple-0 calls advising them a boy was trapped under a train.<\/p>\n
A spokesman said crews arrived within five minutes to find the boy trapped and worked swiftly to extricate him.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe patient who was then treated by Ambulance Victoria and transported to hospital,\u201d a FRV spokesman said.<\/p>\n
An Ambulance Victoria spokesman said the boy was assessed and treated by intensive care and advanced life support paramedics at the scene.<\/p>\n
\u201cA boy with a serious lower body injury was transported by road ambulance to the Royal Children\u2019s Hospital,\u201d a spokesman said.<\/p>\n
He is now said to be in a serious but stable condition.<\/p>\n
Paramedic Alex Hemsley told the ABC they transported the young person quickly under emergency conditions \u2014 lights and sirens conditions \u2014 with a pre-notification to the Royal Children\u2019s Hospital with regards to their injuries.<\/p>\n
\u201c(Paramedics) did everything as quickly as they could have done, provided the highest level care to this young person on potentially on one of the most traumatic days of their lives,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Mary Farah, principal at St Aloysius College, wrote to the school community on Monday to provide an update.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur immediate priority is providing support to the family and ensuring our community is kept informed as reliable information becomes available,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn times of such sudden and distressing news, the strength of our college family is more important than ever.<\/p>\n
\u201cI know that your thoughts and compassion will be with the student and their family as they face this incredibly difficult time.\u201d<\/p>\n
Footage from the scene showed workers crouched between the two carriages while others on the platform assisted.<\/p>\n
A stretcher could also be seen nearby.<\/p>\n
Train lines were closed while emergency services responded to the incident.<\/p>\n
