En ciblant une \u00e9tape tr\u00e8s pr\u00e9coce et commune du processus infectieux, c&rsquo;est-\u00e0-dire l&rsquo;attachement du virus \u00e0 la cellule h\u00f4te, la technologie ouvre la voie \u00e0 une strat\u00e9gie pr\u00e9ventive compl\u00e9mentaire aux vaccins, aux traitements antiviraux existants et aux mesures de protection classiques.<\/p>\n<p>Une d\u00e9couverte qui date de la pand\u00e9mie de Covid<\/p>\n<p class=\"ap-StoryElement ap-StoryElement--mb ap-StoryText\">En 2020, d\u00e8s le d\u00e9but de l&rsquo;\u00e9pid\u00e9mie du coronavirus, David Alsteens (UCLouvain, WEL Research Institute), utilise sa plateforme de microscopie \u00e0 force atomique de pointe, pour observer comment le covid s&rsquo;attache \u00e0 nos cellules.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ap-StoryElement ap-StoryElement--mb ap-StoryText\">Avec son \u00e9quipe de UCLouvain-WEL Research Institute, le chercheur d\u00e9couvre l&rsquo;importance de certains acides sialiques \u00e0 la surface de nos cellules pour permettre au virus de s&rsquo;y attacher. Les acides sialiques, des r\u00e9sidus de sucre, sont comme des petits verrous o\u00f9 le virus vient se fixer gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 ses prot\u00e9ines de surface avant d&rsquo;entrer dans la cellule h\u00f4te.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ap-StoryQuote-text\">80% : c&rsquo;est le taux d&rsquo;efficacit\u00e9 mesur\u00e9 sur les souris pour ce leurre mol\u00e9culaire innovant. L&rsquo;\u00e9tape suivante ? Les essais sur l&rsquo;homme.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ap-StoryElement ap-StoryElement--mb ap-StoryText\">Maintenant que le m\u00e9canisme est mis au jour, il faut r\u00e9ussir \u00e0 le contrer. C&rsquo;est l\u00e0 que David Alsteens se tourne vers le professeur St\u00e9phane Vincent du Laboratoire de Chimie Bio-organique de l&rsquo;UNamur. Il produit alors une mol\u00e9cule flanqu\u00e9e d&rsquo;acides sialiques, un leurre, qui sature le virus et l&#8217;emp\u00eache de se lier aux cellules de son h\u00f4te.<\/p>\n<p>Une spin-off pour d\u00e9velopper le spray<\/p>\n<p class=\"ap-StoryElement ap-StoryElement--mb ap-StoryText\">Une spin-off a \u00e9t\u00e9 cr\u00e9\u00e9e fin juin 2026 pour allier l&rsquo;expertise des deux \u00e9quipes de chercheurs. Cette jeune entreprise wallonne, baptis\u00e9e Intercept Bio, b\u00e9n\u00e9ficie du soutien de plusieurs programmes de financement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ap-StoryElement ap-StoryElement--mb ap-StoryText\">Le leurre d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 par les scientifiques montre une efficacit\u00e9 de 80 % sur les souris.
