Ondanks dat meerdere klinische studies dit al lieten zien, bleef er discussie bestaan over het nut van antibioticaprofylaxe bij deze procedure. \u201cOnze studie, met real-world data, laat zien dat de kans op een infectie bij transperineale prostaatbiopsie heel laag is, ook bij mannen met risicofactoren\u201d, aldus arts-onderzoeker Sanne Westerhout van het Erasmus MC en het Antoni van Leeuwenhoek.<\/p>\n<p>Bij mannen met een verhoogde PSA-waarde in het bloed wordt eerst een echo en eventueel een MRI-scan van de prostaat verricht. Bij een aanhoudend vermoeden van prostaatkanker moet biopsie vervolgens uitwijzen of hiervan daadwerkelijk sprake is, legt Sanne Westerhout uit. \u201cHet biopt kan op twee manieren afgenomen worden: transrectaal, dus via de anus en door de darm, of transperineaal, dus via het stukje huid tussen anus en balzak.
