Interest in travel centered on chocolate is rising, particularly with a spring holiday approaching. New research shows that global searches for Easter travel have jumped significantly this month, indicating a broader trend toward trips focused on culinary themes and local traditions.

Study Ranks European Chocolate Destinations

A recent analysis by Avis has ranked European cities that are surprising centers for chocolate tourism. The ranking considered factors including the number of chocolatiers and chocolate shops listed on Yelp, attractions like museums and factory tours, Google review ratings, and monthly search volume for chocolate-related terms. The goal was to identify locations where chocolate is integral to the local culture, even if they are not the most famous for it.

Top Five Cities for Chocolate Enthusiasts

Turin, Italy, was ranked first. The city is noted for its 233 chocolatiers, five chocolate attractions, and nearly 50,000 monthly searches. It has a long chocolate history dating to 1585 and is the origin of gianduja and bicerin. Visitor options include the Pfatisch Chocolate Museum, factory tours, and the annual CioccolaTo festival.

Perugia, Italy, placed second. It is known as the home of Baci chocolates and hosts the Eurochocolate festival, which draws around one million visitors each year. Two of its chocolate establishments, Casa del Cioccolato Perugina and Cioccolateria Augusta Perusia, received high Google ratings.

Salzburg, Austria, took third place, aided by its compact city centre, 51 chocolatiers, and its link to the original Mozartkugel, first created by Furst Confectionery in 1890. The chocolate experience there is described as closely linked to the city’s history.

York, England, ranked fourth. Despite having only 12 chocolate shops listed on Yelp, it draws more than 12,000 monthly searches due to its confectionery past and attractions such as York’s Chocolate Story. The city is also the birthplace of Rowntrees and Terry’s Chocolate Orange.

Antwerp, Belgium, completed the top five with 44 chocolatiers and two major attractions: Chocolate Nation, described as the world’s largest Belgian chocolate museum, and Choco-Story Antwerp, where visitors can watch live praline-making demonstrations.
