Richard Bennett: Meeting with the Taliban in Brussels Is an Insult to Afghan Women

Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan, has said that meeting with the Taliban in Brussels would be an insult to Afghans, especially women.

On Monday, June 22, Richard Bennett wrote on X that respect for human rights and refugee law is essential.

Bennett also said he supports a statement by Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, expressing regret over the European Union’s new regulations that allow accelerated deportations.

He emphasized that Afghan asylum seekers must not be returned to unsafe conditions.

However, in recent weeks, reports have emerged that a Taliban delegation was invited by the European Union for talks regarding the deportation of Afghan refugees.
