President Donald Trump‘s U.S. ambassador to Belgium publicly took issue with Katy Perry on stage at a recent America250 event held in Brussels, mocking the singer for not attending.
Ambassador Bill White was one of many who spoke at an invite-only event held in Cinquantenaire Park in the Belgian capital on Sunday, June 28, to mark the 250th anniversary of America’s founding. The event organizers had reportedly invited the “I Kissed a Girl” singer, 41, to perform, but she wasn’t able to attend due to previous contractual issues — something White took issue with on stage.
“So we were gonna have Katy Perry. Who cares?” White said to tepid laughs from the crowd, The Daily Beast reported on Monday, June 29. “Karma is a [expletive]. You know the joke? She was gonna perform last night. She got rained out.”
White was referring to Perry’s contracted headlining performance at the country’s Werchter Boutique festival the day before, which was canceled due to inclement weather.
“I was backstage at the show in the middle of hair and makeup when this news was delivered, and they gave me no choice,” Perry wrote on Instagram, announcing the bad news. “I am just as unhappy as you are. Unfortunately this is beyond my control, but the safety of all 55,000 of you always comes first and foremost.”

She added, “I am sorry I can’t change the weather, and even sorrier that all of us can’t be together tonight.”
Despite having some choice words for her at the event itself. White acknowledged Perry’s contractual hurdle back in February in an interview with Belgian outlet The Bulletin.
“Her contractual obligations prohibit her from talking about other events in Belgium until that concert is sold out,” White told the outlet. “So maybe she will come the next evening, maybe not.”
White’s complaints come after several artists backed out of another celebration being held in Washington D.C.
Although Perry didn’t attend the event in Belgium, the event included performances from the Zac Brown Band as well as FBI Director Kash Patel‘s girlfriend, country singer Alexis Wilkins, singing the National Anthem.
