GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT) – The United States men’s national soccer team has officially advanced to the Round of 16 at the World Cup, as the final matches of the Round of 32 concluded Friday.
Local fans said they are feeling optimistic heading into the next stage of the tournament.
“I’d say that Team USA is actually doing really well,” said Issac, a Team USA fan. “I think I’ve only lost once.”
Cade Sweeny, another Team USA supporter, said the team’s performance and the tournament’s location have boosted his confidence.
“Yeah, so I’m feeling pretty confident with Team USA this year,” Sweeny said. “I think they look really good. I think the World Cup being in the United States is really good for soccer in general.”
Fan Trae Frigetto said he and his friends are looking ahead to the next round, with particular attention on one player.
“My friends and I are so excited for the USA to come to the next round,” Frigetto said. “Balagan got a red card in the last game, and I hope he just keeps on killing it in this next game.”
The Round of 16 begins Saturday. Team USA plays Belgium on Monday at 6 p.m.
