Afghanistan’s Embassy and Mission to Belgium and the European Union have strongly condemned Pakistan’s recent military airstrikes on Afghan territory, which reportedly killed a large number of civilians, including women and children.
In a statement issued on Sunday, February 22, the embassy stated that the attacks raise serious concerns under the United Nations Charter, including respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the peaceful resolution of disputes.
The statement added that the use of violence at a time when the Afghan people are grappling with severe hardships under Taliban rule only heightens instability and fear and threatens the security and dignity of civilians.
The embassy called on the government of Pakistan to immediately halt its military operations and address concerns through dialogue and international mechanisms.
It also urged the international community, including the United Nations, the European Union, and regional partners, to ensure appropriate accountability and to clearly advocate for the protection of civilians, de-escalation of tensions, and adherence to international law.
Nazifullah Salarzai, Afghanistan’s ambassador to Belgium and the European Union, said in the statement: “The loss of innocent lives during the holy month of Ramadan is deeply concerning. Respect for sovereignty, protection of civilians, and adherence to international law are not optional principles; they are indispensable obligations.”
The embassy emphasized that an immediate cessation of military actions and a responsible stance from the international community in defense of peace, accountability, and human dignity are essential.
The statement comes after Pakistan’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting earlier announced that seven hideouts of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) inside Afghanistan had been targeted in military strikes.
