Belgium is facing what’s considered its “biggest ecological catastrophe” as wildfires have scorched thousands of hectares of land. Around 500 firefighters from across the country and neighbouring countries have been battling the fire, along with assistance from farmers and volunteers. Roughly 3,000 hectares in the High Fens nature reserve of moorland, peat and woods have burned – more than doubling Belgium’s last record-breaking fire in 2011, which burned close to 1,400 hectares. Richard Pimenoff has more.
