One of Belgium’s biggest wildfires remained out of control Monday despite rain and cooler weather, as flames spread through the eastern High Fens towards the German border. Meanwhile, Greece investigated a deadly blaze and battled new fires near Athens.
The Belgian fire has burned around 30 sq km in Liege province, about 8 km from Germany. Firefighters from Belgium, Norway, Sweden, Germany and the Netherlands, backed by aircraft and police drones, worked to contain the blaze.
Overnight rain helped dampen the fire and reduced the risk of smouldering areas reigniting, but authorities said it had little effect on the fire’s centre. Hundreds of residents remained under precautionary evacuation orders.
In Greece, investigators examined the site of a wildfire on Salamina that killed two people, injured nine and destroyed several homes on Sunday.AP
