NARRATOR: Brussels, the capital of Belgium, is also the headquarters of the European Union.

It is an important center for commerce and industry, hosting many banks and national and multinational corporations.

Perhaps the best known of the city’s traditional products is Brussels lace.

Richly decorated buildings in the historical center—Groote Markt, or “Big Market”—demonstrate the wealth of Brussels, traditional crossroads of Europe’s trade routes.
